Christmas, With a Side of Christ, Please

Amidst all the shopping, baking and general stress-making, one fine Christian lady pauses to reflect on the spirituality of Christmas:

"Like Easter, (the Christian holiday on which Christians celebrate the resurrection of Christ), Christmas is a very Holy and Sacred holiday for many people around the world. If you’ve never been to a midnight mass at a Catholic church, you should try it, regardless of what you believe. The glitz and glamour that come with Christmas, whether timed with the Winter Solstice to recruit more Christians in the early church or not, is a small part of what this day means for many of us."

Thank you, for saying what I have been thinking but couldn't figure out how to properly phrase it.

I don't judge people for saying Merry Christmas, but many that are Christiand get offended when people say Happy Holidays. It goes both ways. People should be able to say what they want, ad others need I be less sensitive and judgy.

As an atheist, I get ostracized a lot, especially in the heavy Catholic area I live in. I don't believe in the spiritual elements of the holidays, so to create some sort of peace, I say Happy Holidays.

I posted on my blog this week about some experiences I have had with this this year in particular. The comments above cover it: it is the sentiment behind saying Happy whatever that is important TO ME. Besides, I'm not one to wear my beliefs on my sleeve, so I wouldn't expect someone to know just by looking at me what MY holiday is. Happy Christmas...or whatever else. I think the PC people try to make us THINK there is some...negative association with not saying Merry Christmas, and I just don't believe that.

I don't care what words you greet me with, as long as it's said in kindness. To me, that's all that matters. And if you greet me in kindness, then I will do the same for you.

Jessie and Wendy are right. Although I have been concentrating on saying and writing Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays has been in use since I was a little girl--and much longer. I don't think, in most cases, there is any undercurrent of a political or religious cut in most happy, sincere greetings.

It occurred to me that the reason we say Happy holidays is to cover them all! Christmas , Hanukkah and NewYears Eve! That's it. We have been saying it for years and years now. Enjoy your season whatever it is!!! ;D

I appreciate all greetings. What matters is the sentiment behind it, not the exact words. I get really frustrated with people who think that "Happy Holidays" is some insidious way that people are trying to "take Christ out of Christmas" (a prhase I heard repeatedly growing up in the Christian church). I am now an adult, and proudly pagan. But I still say Merry Christmas. It's what I grew up saying and it stuck. But I fully acknowledge that Christmas is NOT the only holiday people are celebrating this time of year. Saying "Happy Holidays" isn't an affornt to Christianity - it's a sign of respect for everyone NOT celebrating Christmas this time of year.

All greetings! I'm Catholic and "believe" but I also "believe" that not everyone does and we can "put Christ back in Christmas" all we want but that seems kind of short-sighted with spiritually-blended families. My big rule in life is just not to be ignorant. :0)

I don't care what anyone says or whether they believe or not. It's the holidays, people need to just start being nice instead of judging and condemning others.

I'm Jewish and agree with you that I also appreciate all greetings. Well, except those that try to throw their religion in your face and think it's better than everyone else's.
