[Editor's Note: Have your grandparents ever surprised you with a revelation about their past or their beliefs? You grow up thinking you know what your Grandma has been through, and then, BAM! She surprises you. Mother of Ambition recently shared one of those moments with her husband's grandmother. Not only is it a fun and informative post about breastfeeding and generational issues, but it's a touching tribute to a grandma who seems totally amazing. -Jenna]
Grandma's a Lactivist! What?!?:
Last week we had our usual afternoon visit and, as usual, I whipped out a boob to breastfeed Emma when she got fussy. Grandma has seen me breastfeed tons of times but this time she commented on how I shouldn't feel embarrassed about nursing there in "the home." I told her that I don't feel embarrassed to be nursing anywhere and have nursed Emma everywhere from restaurant booths to benches on 16th Street Mall and even while walking through TJ Maxx (where I was told that my baby was the happiest baby in the world, thank you very much!). I told Grandma that if someone says anything negative to me about it, I just smile and think about squirting milk in their eye. To which she replies, "you have every right to!", I like to think she meant I have the right to squirt milk at someone but I'm not exactly sure to what she was referring... ahem...
She proceeded to tell me about how she wished she had been able to breastfeed her sons. She had contracted a blood born disease while working as a nurse and the physicians believed she would be putting herself and her sons in harms way by nursing them. She said she was heartbroken to know she wouldn't be nursing her sons. Go figure, Grandma's a Lactivist!!!
