[Editor's Note: Have you ever worked with someone like this? You know, the one who makes racially offensive remarks and then tries to brush it off like it's no big deal?

A reader wrote in to Allison Green of Ask a Manager with this predicament and wants to know how to make him stop. Not only are these comments offensive, they are illegal. --Grace]

The guy who shares my actual workspace with me, who is close to my age and has been working with the company for about 4 years, is racist and sexist. I gave him a lift home from work once, and in the 15-minute car ride, he made many sexist and racist comments about women, Asians, Indians, and African American people.

Ever since that day, he has also routinely made offensive statements about these groups in relation to calls he has received (he does IT support) and in passing conversation with me during work hours. As an Asian woman and a decent human being, it is infuriating to hear this kind of talk from anyone, let alone a guy that I have to share a workspace with and am forced to deal with on a daily basis.

For most companies it is against their policies, and can even end up in instant termination. I know that at the company I work for, you get a note to file. I have to deal with his at my job. I get racist remarks and what not said to me all the time, but I haven't filed anything. I just don't want the extra drama.
