Leaving Sweet Comments

[Editor's Note: Cupcakes, The Kir Corner, states are the perfect dessert because they're "instant celebration in a cup" which is part of the analogy she makes between blog comments and this sweet treat. In a world of social media experts, Kir admits that even though she has blogging for many years, she doesn't know a lot about the tech side. What she does know about is how to leave a good comment, and as a lucky recipient of her commenting work, I promise that people can learn a thing or two from her. --Mel]

She writes,

I will never leave you with a simple “GREAT JOB!”

Instead I will tell you
WHY it was great
HOW you moved me
WHAT you wrote that let me know I was not alone
and WHERE I am if you need me.

And she doesn't. Go over and read all of the commenting advice she has to give.

It's so true - a great, thoughtful comment can really brighten my day. Just like a cupcake! I love the comparison. There are certain people among my readership that when I see that they have left a comment, I immediately start smiling because I know it's going to be good. I have even gotten inspiration for future posts from comments!

Now that image of the cupcakes is making me drool. And I love the apple cupcakes that accompany your original blog post! They are so cute!

So true...all comments are like icing but a well written comment is the whole cupcake :-) I don't really care for the scratch my back and I'll scratch yours reciprocal world of social media. I like the engagement and relationships to happen organically (idealist?...yeah, can't help it, that's me). A good comment will not just give you a linkback, it may compel someone to click on that link and you may also start a wonderful new relationship as a friend or colleague with your fellow blogger.

By the way...Great job! I really mean that.

I love a good IDEALIST!!! especially when it comes to being good to one another here in cyberspace. I have actually come up with ideas to write about on my own blog while commmenting on another, that to me is superb Collaboration (without that blog even knowing it) so I agree it's so important to engage one another, to really think about what we're writing and give a lot of love, thought back to the place we are visiting.

your comment was the sweetness I needed today..thank you for that.

So incredibly true!!! And Kir is a queen when it comes to sharing comment love that is sincere and shows she has not just read a post, but actually thought about the words or emotions expressed. This post makes a great case for statistics on posts being replaced by the quality & depth of comments instead of just the count.

Ciao Mom

HI there my friend, mentor, inspiration. You have taught me so much this year about where to put my talents, what to be proud of and stand tall about...what would I do without YOU.

thank you for this comment on my post, it's one of the things that I keep in mind as I surf through blog posts, that the number of comments isn't the poing, ti's what's inside those comments. Thank you for seeing that and being a constant source of "icing" for me. xo

When I was in the restaurant business and one of our tables (customers) went on and on about how outstanding their service was, it meant one thing.. we were going to be left with nothing more than what I referred to as a "verbal tip". Same goes for "great post".. it's like they want to acknowledge you but they can't think of anything else to say. How do you respond to that? Thanks! I agree it was a great post!

Great post, by the way ;) (how could I not.. )

I like this analogy, because it's true and speaks to the heart of what I was rying to say..that if you're reading, you need to SHOW UP and comment. I might not get back to a post for weeks, but when i do...I acknowledge that and then I let them know I might have read it late, but I hear them, I get it. In the blog world isn't that all we want...to be read and "heard"?

I loved this comment...it was GREAT...(how could I resist?) thank you for it, made my day.

There is nothing worse than receiving the dreaded "Great post." I know the person means well, but it really feels empty. Comments create a conversation. There is little say when someone gives you a dead end comment like that. It's like waking into a party and mumbling to yourself in a corner. Don't do it. Not to mention, there is little chance the blogger will ever follow you back. Clearly, you don't have much to say! *waves hi to Alison@Mama Wants This *

HI Renee, thank you for taking the time to read this and for leaving me such a great comment. Of everything I've written this year, this post is really the heart of who I am and I'm so glad that it's resonating with people. it's nice to meet you!!

This is great advice. I believe in leaving heartfelt comments on every blog I visit and read. I would want the same done for me. It's good to know there are others who feel as passionate about it as me.

I am always happy to know that there are other commenters like me too. It makes me feel good to think about lots of people taking the time to truly comment on something we write from our hearts. thank you so much for this comment.

I really love your instructions on leaving a good comment. I'm actually writing them down on a post-it so I can put it next to my computer. I love the analogy, too, of a good comment to a delicious dessert. Clicking open an email and reading that it's a thoughtful, intriguing comment is like opening a gift. And I hope to work diligently on making my own comments yummy gifts that make bloggers happy! Thanks for the guidance :)

Too Many Fish to Fry Hi there :) MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I am so honored, because I have lots of things saved in my email, or hung on my cubicle too to remind me about great advice I need to remember....to have you tell me that you are "saving me" is a true gift to me my friend. THANK YOU for this ICING you gave me today. :)

Kir, it's so wonderful to see you here again, featured deservedly. As well as you wrote this, your comments are always equally well thought out, articulated and filled with warmth and love. So glad to see you spreading the message of cupcake comments here. xo

HI Alison...as always you leave the most wonderful comments, thank you for tweeting this too...it made me smile all weekend. I think that you would agree that this post was one of my favorites because of its sweetness...and you always leave me that...all the wonderful "ICING" you bring to my life. THANK YOU.

One of the things I love best about the community I am in is the generosity we have with comments -- good comments.

Kir is an excellent one to give advice on this.

TheKirCorner 13 pts

HI Lori...I think that I have always taken my cues from you, from the ver beginning about how to truly leave a comment. Thank you for showing me the way and for always leaving me beautiful thoughts and ideas in your notes to me. I am so glad you are part of my life and community.

Writing good comments is an art in its own way.

Sometimes I may succeed at writing good comments. Sometimes not so much. I do try.

But I don't mind getting a short comment like "good job," because I know that sometimes readers don't have time for much more. Yet they wanted to be sure to say "something!" And I still appreciate them so very much for that!

In my early months of blog reading, I was quite self-conscious about leaving comments. I wondered if I had anything worthwhile to say. Still have that little nay-saying voice that tells me my thoughts are better kept to myself. But most days I battle that voice and win, hitting "post comment" with only mild trepidation.

Here's to sweet comments and luscious cupcakes!

TheKirCorner 13 pts

I will say that I agree to an extent, I don't like leaving just a great job...and I don't like when others do either...I want the ICING,,,and I wat to layer it for the people I am writing a note to. That said, I do wonder if I have anything worthwhile to say myself...esp if I am finally commenting on a post that has hundreds of comments already, but I also know that ONE VOICE makes a big sound sometimes...so i always hit publish.

thank you for leaving me such sweetness. :)
