Moving Home to Take Care of My Mom

BlogHer Spotlight

What would it take for you to leave the beautiful land of California to move to the Midwest -- as fall is already turning to winter? It would take something bit, wouldn't it? What about caring for your aging mother with moderate dementia? Yeah, that'll do it, won't it? Nancy Wurtzel at Dating Dementia is doing just that.

Despite leaving behind Trader Joe's, she's doing what needs to be done.

Blue SuitcaseMy reason for going is my Mother, of course. Those of you who read my blog know that Mummy — as we call her — will soon be 91, and she has moderate dementia. My saintly middle sister has been Mummy’s primary caregiver for years. However, my sister and her husband are in Florida for the winter and Mummy can no longer spend the long cold months fending for herself. We have no other family in the area and all of Mom’s friend’s are old, too.

Mummy needs someone there and going home is the right thing to do.
