Natural Yarn Dying

[Editor's Note: Did you know you can dye yarn with fruit and vegetables? Neither did I, but my friend Vickie Howell taught me all about it. Spices and juices make great organic dyes for everything from Easter eggs to ice crayons to yarn. Vickie experimented with blueberries, spinach, beets and more with varying degrees on success. Vickie used a thrifted sweater that she unraveled for the yarn in this project that is also included in her book Awareknits: "I'm excited about the added element of stretching yardage in a creative way, that the dyeing/repurposing aspect will bring to the book. It makes creating beautiful, non-toxic garments for their children, accessible to mothers on a budget (and frankly during these times, who of us isn't?)"
