My thoughts of late have turned to the subject of time – the passage of time, how we measure time, time travel, longing for the past – and how and why we tell stories about it. It may have begun with the brilliant ramblings of Matthew McConaughey’s Rust Cohle, the emaciated, pony-tailed, beer can-sculpting visionary of the masterfully ahead-of-its-time and woefully brief first season of HBO’s True Detective: “Time is a flat circle. Everything we’ve ever done or will do, we’re gonna do OVER and OVER and OVER again…” It could be the arrival of the solstice, and how quickly the deliciousness of summer seems to flash past us all. . . .
