Pets and People: Shades of Trauma

As a mother of six - including two (or is it three?) adopted children from Kazakhstan - Anne has written this wonderful post about being sensitive to the hidden pains of an adoptee, whether it be human or animal. In this case, it's the family dog, Sophie, that gets her attention:

"When she first came home to us she was quiet and kept to herself. Over time she has blossomed and is now a friendly, loving little dog that the whole family just adores. I had almost forgotten about her past. Perhaps she had forgotten, as well. But, like any being once traumatized, triggers will always remain. Triggers that can at once conjure up memories and emotions long forgotten."

We've "adopted" all of our pets (several have adopted us). I wrote a recent post about one of our adoptees that you might enjoy. www.dianeweidenbenner.com

I had a Siamese cat who we adopted. She walked into our yard. She was beautiful but nobody showed up to claim her. She quickly became one of our family members. But I still remember that whenever I whistle, she would become aggressive or run away from the room. We never knew her past but I'm guessing it drudged up bad memories instead of her just not liking the sound.

Very cute dog! I love dogs and we also have 6 dogs. Four came to us from the street, embraced them. It would be nice if all people tisztelné the animals! Best Regards from Hungary! Terike

Thank you for a powerful reminder. I do try to remember this in my daily life and hope I'm successful at least some of the time. Working with students with PTSD, I've learned not to come up behind a student unexpectedly, for example.

So many walking wounded, both human and animal, and the wounds are not often visible. Beautiful post.

isthisthemiddle Thanks. Yes, working/living with people with PTSD can be tricky business. Lots for us to think about and be cognizant of. If only we could walk in their shoes for a bit it might help us to better understand, but alas....

isthisthemiddle A little kindness goes a long way. Yes! Kindness... to pets and people. May it always be so.
