Let Your Children Become... Themselves

Featured BlogHer Network Post

[Editor's Note: Prior to reading Mama Eve's post, I had never heard for RIE, pronounced RIE and standing for Resources for Infant Educarers. There are lots of theories and philosophies about how "best" to raise children as I'm sure you know. I like the way Mama Eve walked into this one, admitting her initial discomfort with their approaches -- because letting your kids be themselves, no matter what, can be pretty hard. -Jenna]

RIE: A Promise for Your Children to Become Themselves:

DSC03676RIE tells us our children will be themselves.

Even writing that down makes me a bit uncomfortable. I want to go back and say, wait, what I really mean is that it will help them become a better version of themselves, or the best version of themselves, or a superhuman version of themselves. Right??

But it doesn’t. Just themselves.

I have to sit and take a moment with that, because the profundity can easily be lost in its simplicity.
