The novel, Anna Karenina, begins with the sentence, “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” And while we all know that happy Russian families exist, you’d be hardpressed to find one in a popular novel or film. Social commentators have long observed that, the colder the climate, the more melancholy the populace.
