[Editor’s note: Now things are getting really interesting! In the wake of the Susan G. Komen debacle and the contraception flap in Congress, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Sen. Barbara Boxer have announced a stunning new campaign to protect women’s rights. It’s called One Million Strong for Women, and Jessica Pieklo at Care2.com has the details. Are you ready to sign up?--Mona]

Sens. Gillibrand and Boxer, along with seven Democratic senators and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee are appealing to backers on all of their websites to sign on to the “One Million Strong For Women” in hopes of harnessing this energy and using it to make a strong defense for women’s rights.

Sen. Gillibrand made the pitch to supporters in an email. “Our opponents tried to defund Planned Parenthood, in the federal budget and in many states. They tried to destroy our Medicare and Medicaid lifelines, which would be particularly devastating to women,” the email says. “They tried to get the Susan G. Komen Foundation to cut off support for Planned Parenthood.”

I tend to lean with Terri, the previous poster. As a pro-life woman, I resent the implication that to be "for women's rights" inherently means you are pro-choice. To me, true feminism means entrusting and respecting the views of ALL women...even those of us who aren't pro-choice. I am woman. Don't pigeonhole me or make me feel less-so by not supporting what seems to be a very political agenda. What I really dislike? Men who embrace the pro-choice movement solely to pander politically...and there are LOTS of them. As a feminist, I respect my pro-choice sisters (and the brothers who genuinely do support that view)....and hope they'll offer me the same respect for my choice on the issue.

Cheryl Lage I do not understand the boundaries of the politics of either pro-life or pro-choice. There seems to be a real shifting of borders on both fronts. The complexities of each individuals situation makes it difficult for me to commit to a 'side' in this issue. I am almost 62 and what I have seen and experienced and heard always leaves me at a loss to answer to either of these stands. When I had a miscarriage at 41, there were pro-lifers who criticized me for getting pregnant "at my age". I went ahead and did conceive at 43 and had a healthy child (after a BC diagnosis). Pro-choice criticized me too!

The Doctors criticized me. The situations that come up for women and their unpreparedness for many of life's rough times led me to say "I believe in education"!

Terri, do you know of any attempt to block say... Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins from involvement?

Our politics probably do not agree, but after the fiasco involving Komen for the Cure and the outrage flying over contraception, I'm rather glad some on the left are finally calling attention to the fact a whole lot of us do not consider hormonal birth control to be evil.

Please. I've a Degree in History and studied Political Science for years. This is all about politics and this so-called 'movement' is nothing more than a vote-getting scheme. All of the above mentioned politicians are quite left-leaning liberal democrats. So, already, they've chosen to be partisan. I've no need for them to tell me what my rights are under the US Constitution.

I don't think we need a new womens movement we need an invigorated movement period.

I agree we need a new women's movement. But where have these two been as Reproductive rights have been chipped away in the House and Senate?

If you don't think that "the politics" is about Women's Rights, you really don't understand politics in a patriarchy.

I will definitely be involved ;-)

Just a thought, but doesn't the advancement of women's rights necessitate political involvement?

I am not interested in, nor will I support, their agenda. They aren't about Women's Rights -- they are all about the politics.
