Editor's note: As part of their really in-depth 21 Leaders for the 21st Century series, Women's eNews made a list of seven women with political missions in 2012. It runs the gamut from actress Kamala Lopez, who's trying to pass the Equal Rights Amendment, to Robin Read of the nonpartisan National Foundation for Women Legislators (whose members include Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton), to Ann Stone of the Republicans for Choice PAC.They're all inspiring, and I was glad to see a shout-out to the 2012 Project's leader, as well. -- Julie
Mary Hughes' mission is to make this election year, and perhaps every election year in the foreseeable future, a "year of the woman."
She is the founder and director of The 2012 Project, a national, non-partisan campaign of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. Launched in July 2010, the project aims to increase the number of women in Congress and state legislatures by taking advantage of newly created and competitive seats resulting from redistricting and reapportionment.
