Urban Legend Ultrasound: It's a Girl! Oops! No, It's a Boy!

For those of you who found out via ultrasound the gender of your baby prior to giving birth, did you have that little doubt in the back of your head? The one that said, "Are you really sure that ultrasound tech was right? Should you really be painting these walls pink?" And then five different people told you stories about their best friend's sister's cousin's uncle's wife's nanny who was totally surprised by a baby of a gender that they didn't plan for on birth day?

I'd like you to meet Sarah H at Salt & Nectar. She is that woman. And her story will both make you laugh (she found out the real gender IN MEXICO while on a BABYMOON!) and make you cry (gender woes, ahoy!).

Thankfully she brings the laughs first. She writes:

baby ultrasound_4I am an urban legend.

You know that friend of a friend of a friend you heard about? The one who was told she was having a girl by two different ultrasound techs only to find out – SURPRISE! – it was actually a little boy?

That’s me.

Did you ever have an Urban Legend kind of ultrasound with a surprise ending?

The issue here is that the performance of ultrasound (sonography) is largely unregulated and, unfortunately, there are far too many people out there doing scans that have inadequate training and experience.

As an ultrasound professional with 25+ years of experience my recommendation to all people who are scheduling their ultrasound exams (both OB as well as all other types of scans) is to inquire as to whether the laboratory is ACCREDITED and/or if the person who will be doing the scan is CREDENTIALLED by the AMERICAN REGISTRY FOR DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY (ARDMS). If the answer is "no" seek another service provider!

How crazy! Well, hey, as long as baby is healthy, who cares, right? We bought gender neutral clothing and toys and only a blanket and dress for a girl. Just in case.

I have one better! I was told I was having one baby and now have 4 month old identical twin girls! Even the doppler only picked up 1 heartbeat and i gained 20 pounds total. We found out may 26 and I had them June 1st. Happy perfect healthy little girls weighing almost 6lbs each at birth.

@twinsmommyplus1 Shut. Your. Mouth.

I had FIVE different techs tell me I was having a girl in 1991. My friends threw me a 'girl clothes' shower...had to return everything! I know ultrasound technology has come a long way from then though!

afmarsh I have to say I prefer the boy's shower since I've now had both. You get so much more gear at a boy's shower!

My best friend went through that! They told her it was a boy at the ultrasound. They already had a boy, so they were excited---they already had all the stuff! Then in the delivery room, a girl popped out. She and her husband looked at each other, mouths gaping, for a solid two minutes. Then my friend burst into tears and said, "I don't have anything for her to wear!" lol She's pregnant again, and this one is supposed to be a boy. I guess we'll see about that!

TheLazyChristian I bet she figured it out quick. I'm always amazed at couples who don't find out the sex and yet the baby girls are always swathed in pink by the trip home!

I had the same thing happen too. In 1998 I was pregnant with my first child. I had an ultrasound and was told, "well, we can't really see, but we think it's a girl". So, a month later I paid $200 for another ultrasound (insurance only paid for the first one) and was so excited when they said "It's a girl!" I didn't go paint rooms pink but I did purchase a lot of pretty pink clothes. I had a c-section and the doctor pulls out the baby and says, "It's a BOY?!?!" I remember saying "A boy?" before I fell asleep again. I woke a few minutes later and asked the anesthesiologist, "Did he say I had a boy?"

I had ultrasounds with my others, but never really trusted them either....lol

SemmesSavers I truly can't imagine what I would have done if it had been a delivery room surprise. I think I might still be in shock two years later!

Yeah, I am that legend too. My second daughter was a delivery room surprise. After two US's of a FOR SURE BOY. heh.

Funny, I didn't believe them so much when they said boy with my next child. Although he was a boy.

That's why I've decided I'm not finding out again. Even if they told me it was a girl I wouldn't believe them.

Me, too! I didn't want to know either time, but DH was dying to know. So we compromised and were surprised the first time, but knew the second time.

Marissa, I'm not finding out the next time. When you find out the gender beforehand, that's ALL you know about the baby. I feel like if you wait then you're holding YOUR baby - not just a boy or a girl!

@Beckett--I have to respectfully disagree. The words 'curated' and 'fashionista' cannot be compared. 'Curated' is a classic word that has been around for a very long time (related to the job title 'curator' at museums, etc.) that describes exactly what Blogher does sometimes. The word 'fahionista' is a current fettish word that may or may not last. Have a happy Tuesday :)

I think curated is a totally appropriate word, nothing like "fashionista." I assume you didn't actually edit the post, so that would be the wrong word. Collected implies that BlogHer went looking for it. But if the process was "we looked at a bunch of stuff, either submitted or independently found, and selected the best or most appropriate items" that sounds like curated to me.

I mean, it is like "fashionista". It''s a word past its sell-by in that context.
"Collected" or "edited" would be more long-lasting. "Curated" is becoming dated.

I am so glad that we decided not to find out the gender for either baby!

My daughter Andrea was supposed to be a boy up until about a month before she was born, too. I decided not to find out with my second one.
