You've probably seen the security camera video of the Chinese toddler getting run over -- multiple times -- by cars, while bystanders did nothing. The two-year old girl, Wang Yue, has died in a Guangzhou hospital.

How does a society get so callous that it allows this to happen? Maria Wen Adcock of Bicultural Mama has an insightful analysis of some of the factors, and why she thinks it's not that different from the corporate greed that's catalyzing Occupy Wall Street:

While human life in general appears devalued in China, it’s especially tragic for children who cannot fend for themselves. Kidnapped children are forced to work as slave laborers in illegal brickwork and mines. Tainted infant formula injures and kills babies. Or a van rolls over a toddler while people watch and continue on.

The common link through all of these scenarios is money. In the U.S., one of the grievances of the Occupy Wall Street movement is the widening gap between the rich and poor. In China, this divide is even sharper, driving people to shut off human empathy for the sake of gaining or retaining money.

Um, this happened in the USA. I believe in NYC in a hospital emergency waiting room. The woman keeled over and lay on the floor for hours. Nobody reported it or checked up on her. IN THE USA!!! IN A HOSPITAL!!! Ummm..... Yeah. So to all those "China" haters... "take a look at yourself and then make that change".

This is so so hard to read (I just now bring myself to see the video) and I feel my skin crawls. It's almost similar here, people are afraid to help out for the fear of being milk for money. Really sad.

and the lady who helped the toddler is now being harassed and people accuse her of helping the child for fame and money. its sad how people are becoming less empathetic...

I would have stopped. But I think Jilian is right. In China boys are much more "precious" to them than girls. It's been their culture for many years. It's so sad though.

99% certain no one stopped because she is a girl. In college and beyond, I was exposed to many many images of girl babies left in the gutters to die. Boys are revered, just look at the statistics: almost 2Mil more boys than girls in China currently, due to sex selection. If the mother is in an area where the single child law is in effect, now she can try again for her boy. Sick.

I would've absolutely stopped. Had I been there to see the people ignoring the poor little girl I would've give them a piece of my mind.

this is the second time that i've witnessed this happen in China. the only way that women can be valued there is if the Women of China stand up for Women in China.

If you know anything about China's history you know there are many who have no value for life - human or otherwise. This doesn't surprise me and it probably has happened many times only there was no camera to capture it is as proof. Bless that child's soul. I pray for those who suffer.

A similar thing (although not a child) happened on the streets on Toronto not too long ago where a man was stabbed and lay bleeding to death on the sidewalk and people actually stepped over and around him (im not sure if he was homeless or people thought he was homeless, like that should matter) and he died. Its sad that we live ina time where this could happen whether it be from being too self focused, being afraid or a combination of both.

How could anyone just pass a toddler by especially when injured and not notice something was wrong?? Plain ignorance!!

Yes of course I'd have stopped. Poor baby. RIP sweet angel. Where the hell was the mother? No one has said anything about her. And may all the people who ignored that poor child be tortured by guilt forever. Karma..thats all I'm sayin!

I'm surprised you felt the need to show this video. I think your point could have been made without it.

Gutted. I had been following this story, but didn't know she'd died. God bless her little soul.
