[Editor's Note: Another Jennifer outlines both advice new bloggers should know as well as the multitude of benefits she derives from blogging. Daily blogging projects such as NaBloPoMo have a way of bubbling up to the surface the very reasons why people enjoy blogging so much in the first place. --Mel]

It’s tough to start a blog and keep at it. I always tell people that the hardest part is setting it up and figuring out what you’re going to say. However, once you get it going, you start to get on a roll. You begin to develop a voice. You even attract some readers along the way.

It can take a while to establish a blog. And even when you have readers, you have to stay on your game and provide good content to keep them. It’s an ongoing process. But the process is the fun part, in my opinion.

So, what do you get out of your blog?

For me, blogging has been a way to sort through the express the issues I experience as a working-at-home mother. I am amazed at how many people I know have told me they are reading and enjoying my blog. If I had known that was going to be the case, my self-doubt would never have let me do it. But, it's out there now so there is no turning back!

I have made several great friends through my blog, it is a way to express my thoughts and I love to write. It just makes sense to me.

Unexpectedly, I have made friends. I didn't know this was a "side effect" of blogging. They help me and I help them.

So great to hear why people blog. I can relate to all the reasons I'm reading so far!

The things I set out to get out of blogging: a way to process ideas I'm struggling with, an outlet for a drive to write, a way to catalogue some of my interests over time.

Unexpected things I've gotten out of blogging: better ability to write quickly and meet deadlines without panic, a more authentic sense of audience, a community of people with similar interests, a greater sense of confidence in my ideas.

I'm embarking on a journey of self-discovery, and I've found that airing out thoughts and ideas is really thought-provoking in and of itself. My blog and my posts on BlogHer are just an outlet for all the stuff in my head. And if I start a conversation along the way, as another commenter said, more the better!

For me, it's purely to keep my creative fire alive. Writing about what I enjoy and expressing myself how I want to gives me the energy to tackle the things that I don't enjoy so much. Making connections with people through my blog just adds fuel to the fire.

The satisfaction of feeling I've started a conversation, with someone, anyone! But it is an even greater feeling when someone comments (or "Sparkles"), it's like they are sitting right there talking to you, either agreeing or discussing. *Smiling!*

Blogging allows me to say what I think and improve my writing skills. It's a nice hobby. It doesn't take up a lot of space, isn't expensive, and if you do it well you can actually make money at it.

Blogging allows me to write about/to my dog as much as I want. I could talk about him all day, every day but that would really annoy my family and friends, therefore I just write about/to him. For me, blogging about what I love is fun, meaningful and frankly, therapeutic.

Thank you for asking!
