50th Anniversary

Melissa Wiley recalls exactly where and when she first encountered A Wrinkle in Time, the tale that inspired millions of young feminists and sci-fi geeks with it's time traveling heroine, Meg Murry. That much-loved story is celebrating 50 years with a Facebook page and a 50 blog celebration.

I’ll never forget where I first met Meg Murry: Mrs. Beville’s 5th-grade language arts class, Aurora, Colorado, 1978. Mrs. B. always picked the best books for her classroom read-alouds: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. The Cricket in Times Square. How to Eat Fried Worms.
And Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time.

So loved A Wrinkle in Time, and can't believe it's been 50 years. I must read it again, soon.

This is one of my all-time favorite books. I've purchased it for gifts, recommended it for many a young reader, and used illustrations as metaphors in therapy sessions. My favorite for people who have body dismorphic disorder...the illustration where Ms. Thing (?) heals Meg. They can't see, so they "feel" a person. Without sight, all of the sudden people are seen in entirely different ways. Le sigh...Madeline L'Engle, you ARE truly one of my author heroines.

Madeleine L'Engle is one of my favorite authors. I hope everyone knows that she wrote for young people and for adults. . . .

"A Wrinkle in Time" is, of course, the first of a four-part Time Quartet. Madeleine also wrote about Meg and Calvin's children, and also has several characters who interact closely with both Meg's daughter and the Austin Family daughter. Um, y'all do know about her Austin Family series, right?

I often read about people who think her books should be banned. I always assume these people have never read them and are morons.

Did I say that out loud? Good.

If "Wrinkle" is your only L'Engle experience, I encourage you to read the sequels and the other series and all of her individual books, both fiction and non-fiction.

It will change your life. It will turn you into a smarter, better person.

I loved her so much. Her books fill three shelves in my large bookcase.

Go forth and improve yourselves! Make sure your kids read them all, too.

Actually, I have no words. Her books are just too breathtaking.

Hello everyone! Madeleine L'Engle mentored our own BlogHer blogger and author, Isabel_anders http://www.blogher.com/spinning-straw-weaving-gold... Ms. L'Engle wrote the Introduction to Isabel's first book in 1987 and recently reissued: http://www.amazon.com/Blessings-Prayers-Married-Co...

SunbonnetSmart.com Actually, Madeleine wrote the introduction to my book Awaiting the Child: An Advent Journal, first published in 1987 and republished with a new cover in 2005. Madeleine wrote about her husband being close to death at the time, in Advent, and contrasted and compared death and new life (as I was pregnant with my first child, and my book is a journal of that time).

My dad read it to me when I went to visit him and my grandma for summer vacation one year. I generally don't like being read to at all, but he read it so well, complete with voices. I've read it myself many times since then. I went and bought all the books while I was pregnant and can't wait for dd to be old enough to read them to her.

Until recently I had the set of books my aunt gave me, which included A Wrinkle in Time. If not for a broken pipe I would still have and cherish them.
