Snow days recall memories...

Snow day!!! Yes, those words can cause just as much excitement for a teacher as they do for a child. Waking up this morning to texts of no school was thrilling until I remembered where I was. I am 600 miles from home, planning to fly out today back to my hometown. Will I make it? Is the airport open? Will I make it in time for our Parent/Teacher conferences scheduled tonight? Why do we still have conferences if there is no school? It seems I am full of questions that have no answers at this moment. This is where the word patience comes in, something I lack greatly. When Garrett was alive snow days were full of fun. Sledding behind the snow machine. Digging trails for the wiener dogs. Walking down to gram's for a visit. Playing with the baby calves in the corral. And praying for another snow day. It seems snow days were always best when there was a big pot of potato soup on the stove and the tea kettle bubbling for hot cocoa at a moments notice. Today, snow days are full of reflection. As I wander the house looking for something, but not sure what it is, I pause in Garrett's room knowing how happy he was in there and looking at his bed, remembering whispers in his ear, "snow day, go back to sleep". I remember the anxiety created in my husband's face as he hurries out to the corral to assess the damage from the night before. Most of all I reflect on blessings - we were so blessed to have such an amazing child for almost 14 years. Blessed to have a beautiful home, a productive farm, a job I love and an amazing husband that loves me always. Yes, I am blessed. Say a prayer that our trip goes well and we make it home safely. Maybe we will get lucky and have another snow day tomorrow. Thanks for reading...
