So You Think You Can Dance Recap: The Top 12...who will make it?
by Elisa Camahort

Yeah, yeah, I know the East Coast already knows what happened tonight, but I'm going to post my recap anyway, and make my predictions anyway, and trust that you'll trust that I haven't looked up the results. (Which you'll probably trust anyway, because I'll probably get it wrong.)

Once again the couples danced twice, and this is the last time they will be stuck to one another like glue...and the last time they can hope for a judge to save the. Starting next week the couples will get moved around, and America will be totally responsible for who goes and who stays.

So, how'd the do under all that pressure?

1. Chelsie and Mark

First they danced a Salsa. Mark is a great performer, but ballroom still ain't his thing. He seemed uncomfortable and a bit stiff. The partnering is great when they're doing tricks and lifts, but little awkward when they're just, you know, dancing. But Chelsie was of course in her element, which gave Nigel plenty of opportunity to exhibit his newly pervy self. (Is it just me, or is he seriously a much more dirty old man this season?)

Second they dance a Broadway number. I was, I confess, distracted by wardrobe malfunctions for both of the poor dancers, but otherwise it was fun and yes, sexy. There is definitely a great sense of trust between them and that little thing called "chemistry." Good thing, because she's pretty much a doofus off the dance floor, and he's probably kind of a freak.

Bottom line: Oh, I think they're totally safe, don't you?

2. Comfort and Thayne

First they danced hip-hop, and just like when Comfort danced krump with Chris, you expect her to be awesome, and she's. just. not. so. much. I actually like her better when she's doing ballroom...probably because those times she's just pretty to look at. Does that make me shallow? I mean, Comfort rocked the movements, but seemed disconnected emotionally. Thayne just was not...oh, let's say...in his element. Too soft. Not good.

Second they danced a Mandy Moore contemporary piece. It felt sort of Martha Graham to me. Mid-century American. It was execute fairly well, but the lack of chemistry continued...and I don't blame it only on Comfort as the judges seemed to. What I wll blame on Comfort is that she was always only "almost there." She almost had her feet fully pointed; she almost had her legs fully extended...but never quite did.

Bottom Line: As N'Sync might say: Bye Bye Bye

3. Jessica and Will

First they danced a Tyce Diorio Contemporary piece. This is the year for Contemporary Dance=Simulated, Elegant Sex on So You Think You Can Dance. I can see why the music put Mia to sleep because it was really boring. The dancers definitely achieved a mood, but I totally disagreed with the judges that this was just the best thing ever. I don't feel Jessica ever really just sticks anything. There's a tentativeness. A sense that she's constantly adjusting.I wouldn't be as cruel as the judges are about it, but I totally get why they're frustrated seeing Will stuck with her all these weeks. I didn't really believe the passion...I thought they were acting. What I did believe is that the costumers once again did us all a big favor. Am I right?

Second they danced the kiss-of-death Quick Step, and so it was. There were some fun steps, but it just was a bit heavy, slow...especially every time they were trying to do the actual Quick Step. Again, I wouldn't be quite as mean as the judges, but I get it.

Bottom line: I kind of fantasize that they'll be in the bottom and Jessica will get booted. But I know it's just a cray dream. Not a dream that they'll be in the bottom...that's possible. But that se'll get booted first time there.

4. Courtney and Gev

First they danced a Cha Cha (choreographed by last year's contestants, Pasha and Anya.) Enough with the flashing lights, people, no seizures wanted here, m'kay! Anyway, I wasn't as hot on Courtney and Gev as the judges seemed to be. Her footwork seemed flat to me. Technically Gev was not there...although I totally get that he threw himself into it with abandon.

Second they danced a Mandy Moor Jazz routine. Again, I only thought this was OK. Not awesome. There was a lot going on; it was fun, but it seemed like the music and choreography called for a little more 'zazz.

Bottom line: OK, the judges want them kept, but I'm kind of meh about them. How about you?

5. Kherington and Twitch

First they danced a Krump routine. Twitch absolutely killed it. He really has the ability to take on the personas for all these different dances, including this one. He was scary and totally got that whole loose-knees thing that Jeanne was educating us about two weeks ago. Kherington looked like was just desperately trying to keep up. And by then end, she couldn't. She just lost her fire...and her place, which is kind of worse when you're dancing choreography. They judges went really easy on her, IMHO.

Second they danced a Smooth Tango. Twitch seemed oddly uncomfortable, and again, oddly, there wasn't much passion between them. Considering how well their Paso Doble went last week, I was a little surprised at how tame and uninspiring this was.

Bottom line: Personally, I thought this was Bottom 3-worthy. I just don't know if America is ready to admit that.

6. Katee and Joshua

First they danced a Viennese Waltz. Now, maybe it is because I really like that Goo Goo Dolls routine, but this was the first number of the evening that really made me feel something.I thought it was quite lovely. And I remain doubtful that Josh as *never* had any training.

Second they danced a Bollywood number. Awesome. And fun. And different etc. etc. etc. I still think Josh knows how to sparkle in the upbeat numbers more than Katee, but the whole thing was really entertaining...and quite skillful as well.

Bottom line: No brainer, they're safe.

Bottom Line for the Bottom 3:

Comfort and Thayne are a no-brainer.

I'd personally have Jessica and Will and Kherington and Twitch join them (I know, shocking!)

But I think Courtney and Gev may save Kherington and Twitch from such a fate.

Comfort and Thayne? Nothing can save them.

But what did you think?
