And when I say stuff, what I really mean is "butts".
Tonight's guest judge was a big round black hat, accessorized with a Toni Basil.
- Karla and Jonathan were first with a Dave Scott hip-hop to "By My Side" by JadaKiss featuring Ne-Yo. The theme of the dance was a "smooth gangsta feel with emotion" with a Bonnie and Clyde style of couple, but it totally didn't come across at all. Karla was good -- and she should be, since she's a member of the Boogie Bots, one of the crews from America's Best Dance Crew -- but this did not work at all. They were out of sync, Jonathan was dancing way too high up in his shoulders, and there was no *risk* involved in any of it. Nigel mentioned no danger, but what I think he was really getting at was that there was no risk-taking, no great chances taken.
Bottom line: Bottom three for sure.
- Asuka and Vitolio danced a Mandy Moore jazz to Pat Benatar's "Heartbreaker" (yes!). It was okay -- not super-great, not terrible. There were definitely parts where their syncing was off, but the one part that I thought they really did well was that reprise of the chorus where it's just vocals and the guitars going DA DUN. DA DUN. DUN DUN DUN DA DUN and they hit alongside the chords with these perfect sharp motions. That part was pretty rad, but overall, I don't think this dance was very memorable.
Bottom line: I think they'll hit the bottom for this one -- the dancing was good, but it wasn't enough.
- Ade and Melissa got a "sensual international style" rumba from Tony Meredith to "Emotion" by Destiny's Child. Wow. Ade and Melissa are a couple that I tend to forget how much I like until I actually watch them dance. This was totally smouldering with really strong partner work from both of them -- Ade's a great lead and always surprises me at how good he is, and Melissa has knocked pretty much everything out of the park so far. Watch for them to get hip-hop (or crump) next week -- that's my prediction.
Bottom line: Safe, safe, safe.
- Janette and Brandon were the second Dave Scott hip-hop dancers to "What a World" by Common. I was really impressed by Brandon's hip-hop skills, from the pop'n'lock-y movements to his overall performance. Janette was also strong, I thought, and there was some great syncing once the rock'n'roll and hip-hop came together in the middle of the piece. They work really well as a couple, and this was nice work from both of them.
Bottom line: Safe, I think.
- The new couple, Kupono and Kayla, got a *cough*barefoot*cough* Viennese Waltz about waking from dreams, choreographed to Jewel's "Sweet Dreams for You", from Jean Marc Genereux. Despite the barefooted-ness, which was called out by the judges, it was an elegant and lovely piece. I was surprised by Kupono's ability to lead so well -- last week I was worried about the lack of male ballroom dancers after sending Max home, but Ade and Kupono both did well tonight. It was a sweet, quiet performance.
Bottom line: I think they should be safe, but a soft gentle performance after surviving the Bottom Three isn't really the way to win the voters back.
- For Randi and Evan, Mia Michaels created a contemporary piece to "Koop Island Blues" by Koop (Ane Brun on vocals)... dedicated to Randi's poodle booty. It was very jazzy and saucy, and it really allowed them to just dance and show us what they have. And what they have is very good! I wish Evan's pants hadn't been so enormous -- I felt he was getting swallowed up by his costume, and he looked much smaller than Randi before she took off her heels. Is it an instant Mia Michaels classic like, say, Lacey and Kameron or Katee and Twitch? Mm, maybe not, but it was definitely enjoyable. I still like Evan, but Randi's really the one to watch in this couple.
Bottom line: ...No pun intended. (They should be safe.)
- Caitlin and Jason danced a Jean Marc Genereux paso doble to "O'Fortuna" from Carmina Burana. This... was interesting. This is on the same level as the "We Will Rock You" Paso Doble that Sara and Jesus got in season three, where you're sitting there thinking, really? Can you really paso doble to this? And I guess the answer is yes, you can, sort of. The whole thing, from the costuming
