Over the many years of running So You've Been Dumped (SYBD), there have been tens of thousands of stories posted from people of all ages and in all four corners of the world. Some are a little funny, others are downright shocking, many are sad and most are deeply universal.
One of the longest running (and most entertaining) threads on the site depicts people's stories of "how, when and where" people were dumped. This thread alone has had hundreds of tales of woe which are slowly being compiled into a book. I just thought I'd give you a little teaser....
First, let's take Heather* for example who, whilst away on a camping trip with her husband of eleven years, learned of his infidelity and got dumped in the process. Double whammy! Naturally, it made for a challenging camping trip, and due to having a ten-year old daughter, it made for a challenging recovery too. Six months down the road, she made heaps of progress, and was starting to feel better when, of course, her ex had a change of heart and came crawling back, but by that time it was too late Heather was too far down the path to recovery to consider it, and she basically told him where to go.
Another of my favorite stories over the years was Jen's story. Out of the many, her's stood out because Jen, a bubbly Californian was dumped from her six-year relationship on a Disney cruise on DAY ONE. As if that weren't bad enough, it was her birthday, which was the reason for the cruise in the first place. When she reminded him of this fact, she simply got "oh yeah, whoops" as if it were an afterthought. Classy.
Speaking of Disney - Ariela was dumped whilst on a People's Airline flight on the way back to New York from a fun-filled trip to Disney World. Seems her ex decided that he was moving to Florida for a new job and just didn't see things working out. All Ariela could think was "Stewardess, how do I open this Emergency door?"
A different kind of Mile High Experience...
Faith was another story that stuck out in my head, as she was not only dumped by mail, but the guy sent the letter Express Mail, Yep, it seems that normal mail just wouldn't be fast enough. I guess at least he took the time to write, that's something, eh? He didn't just vanish.
Cammy went away for a romantic night away the weekend before Valentine's Day. They ate sumptuous food, drank wine, had a a lovely romantic time and then two day's later, on Valentine's Day, he calls to end it. Surely he could have waited a day?
But that's not the worst Valentine's story I ever heard, on SYBD. That would have to be Jane's. Jane was dumped four hours after her grandfather's funeral, as she stood at a pay phone, in the rain.
Ok, I am the first to concede that there is never a truly good time or way to break up, but of course there are sometimes better ways and times than others...is there not? Some of these guys had a real knack for timing, bad timing that is. Generally speaking, it's better to aim to avoid birthdays, holidays, exams or other big occasions but sometimes, I agree, it can't be helped.
Tell us your dumped story!
