The Solar Decathlon sponsored by The U.S. Department of Energy, challenges college teams to "design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive." The winning team will effectively blend "affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.”

One of the front runners in the competition is “Empowerhouse” a home designed by the Parsons School of Design in New York along with other design partners. The house offers a vision to the future, far beyond the competition. Habitat for Humanity is working with Empowerhouse to train their builders in affordable green housing and they plan to adopt and implement the design into their low-cost homes in Washington, DC.
The students built their home on a dock in Hoboken and many thought they were building a water side bar! This article in the New York Times details their adventure, including that fact that after it was built, it had to be disassembled and transported and rebuilt on the Mall in Washington, DC. The competition begins today and runs through October 2.
