Earlier this month, I talked with Alice Bradley, co-author of the fantastic new book, Let's Panic About Babies!, about humor, and she mentioned that she is "constantly looking for the joke," much in the same way that I, as a photographer, am "constantly looking for the light."

Over the past month, I tried to look for the humor in situations as much as possible, and sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Just the trying was pretty eye-opening for me, though: I found that when I tried to look for humor, it required me to detach myself from the circumstances and try to gain a bit of perspective. As I said, it didn't always work, but I think the exercise was good for me.

One interesting thing I did come across over the month was Laughter Yoga -- a form of yoga where participants laugh for 40 minutes (sometimes forced, sometimes not). The theory is that the body can't tell the difference between fake laughter and real laughter -- the physiological and psychological benefits are the same.

I even found a BBC video featuring John Cleese that talked all about it:

Interesting, isn't it?

Now: I don't know that I'm going to spend 40 minutes a day laughing (though it does honestly sound lovely), but I'm drawn to the idea that more laughter daily is good for your health. In fact, the Mayo Clinic maintains that the benefits of laughter include:

  • Stimulation of your heart, lungs and muscles
  • Activation and relief of the stress response
  • Soothing of tensions
  • Improvement of your immune system
  • Relief from pain
  • Increase in personal satisfaction

So here's to laughter and joy, friends. May you encounter something funny every day.

Have you ever thought how nice it would be if when someone thought about you what came to mind is the sound of your laugh?

It is a memory worth keeping!

I, too, feel like laughter is the bed medicine. I write my blog that way- trying to expose the humor in all (most) situations... even those that don't feel funny at the time.

In fact, my tag line is this: Life is funny. (If not, you're doing it wrong.)

Thanks for reminding us to laugh. I'm a Finslippy fan as well.

Cheers!!

Yesterday, I had a critical issue on a project that threatened to delay the launch of a new global system. The stress in the steering committee meeting was palpable.

My boss said "Don't worry. If you get fired, I'll still give you a good reference."

And I laughed so hard, and it immediately lifted so much tension out of the room.

When I need to laugh, I go read a site like Damn You Autocorrect. The best-of section can always get me rolling.

Such a great reminder! I try to see the humor in everything, but sometimes I admit, I have to look VERY hard! :) But I always feel better when I do. Robert Louis Stevenson said it this way, "Sit loosely in the saddle of life." I couldn't agree more, and would add, sit loosely and laugh often!

As I parent three girls and manage two businesses, the more I direct myself to a place of laughter, rather than lament, the more effective I am. There is more left of me at the end of each day because laughter restores, while lament saps.

Gorgeous reminder.

What a great exercise! And not just the laughing together but deliberately find humor in situations - I think that is something we all can do :)

I never knew there was such a thing as Laughter Yoga, thanks for the introduction. I laughed while watching the video! A great way to start the day....it's gloomy and rainy out her, a day to stay in under the covers. After watching the video, a feel....giddy and ready to tackle the day!! Thanks!

That's interesting that the body can't tell the difference. It makes me want to go rent a bunch of comedies :-)
