In a basket, add a cookie sheet, Betty Crocker cookie mixes, measuring spoons, cups, a rubber spatula, over mitts, pot holders, a muffin pan and mixes, dish towels, dish cloths or an oven timer. Whatever you do, whatever you can afford.

Make a basket with a bottle of dish soap, a spray cleaner, brillo pads, windex, paper towels, dish towels and cloths or sponges. This could be for a young person and their first apartment.

Make a basket with several boxes of flavored teas, a pretty cup and saucer, a spoon, a pretty linen napkin, a tea-pot, a small tussie mussie, a box of sugar cubes or a box of scone mix.

How about one with a lullaby C.D. homemade by you, a teething rings, socks, pacifier, baby facecloths, a towel or a story book.

Try one with a book on Scents, a few bottles of essential oil, a bottle of carrier oil (jojoba oil), teaspoons, a set of measuring cups, a bath bag (see post) filled with a mix and a recipe tag attached, a bath pillow, a soothing C.D. you made yourself, a magazine or a luxury bar of soap, a candle or body wash.

For a guy, try a basket with screwdrivers, a tape measure, a travel mug, a map of his state, paper and a pen, spray car fragrance or a fragrance bag….cut 2 pieces of fabric 8×8. Right sides together, sew around 3 sides. Turn. Fill with some stuffing, cedar wood pet bed shavings and a few drops of cedar wood oil. Sew closed….a pair of pliers or jumper cables.

How about a basket with placements, hand towels, a hot pad, coasters, a candle, thick socks, a blank journal and a pretty pen, bookmarks or a Bible.

If you are a pet lover, fill a basket with treats and toys.

For Mom or Dad, Grandma or Grandpa…ask each family member to add a memory. Could be a picture, a song, a recipe, a story or a book they used to read to you.

For the flu….a bag of cough drops, a box of kleenex, a thermometer, a book, soft music or a Bible. If you have a Dollar Tree close to you, they sell great C.D.’s of sweet, healing, quiet, sleepy music. They also sell the sounds of nature for children and fussy babies.

Kids….a movie, C.D., McDonald coupons, a game, a bank with a little money in it, a pair of p.j.’s or socks.

Someone just had a baby or recovering an illness, or depression?

A C.D. of soothing music....and the Dollar Tree has some beautiful ones....a nice soap, a candle, a bath pillow, bath brush, a new bath sponge, bath salts or scrubs. Bubble bath...gifts from Bath and Body..powder, lotion....flavored teas with a pretty tea cup.....a small bouquet of flowers...get them things they can take into the bathroom and relax for a while.

My sister and Mother go to the hospital OFTEN!!!!!!!!!!!....too often, for Chemo. Sometimes it takes hours. My sister also told me that her emotions get low in the winter...dark skies, short days. She does not craft...nor does my mother. My sister likes to read and my Mother cannot....her eyesight is bad, right now.

A basket could be made for someone in this situation, or a similar one, to be taken to the hospital or for a large span in time.

C.D.'s, books on C.D. and an AM/FM player with earphones..an MP3 player..extra batteries, .small bags of candy, chips or gum...a small pillow...an address book, a nice pen, paper, stationary or blank cards, with stamps...small games or a deck of cards...paperback books...crossword puzzles, word game books or a nice letter of love and encouragement.

How about a nice cookie jar.....some cookie mixes and a cookie sheet, or potholders?

A very simple gift would be a bottle of hand soap from Bath and Body, with a couple of nice handtowels.

I just bought Oatmeal Raisin Cookie hand soap from B & B...and I think I'd better go get more. I only bought 3 and the smell is heavenly. The nice thing is, B&B puts the soaps...pump bottle, regular or foaming...on sale, so you can afford them. In October they will come out with their new Christmas scents. They sometimes go on sale for 5 for $15, or 6 for $20. A bottle of soap and 2 nice handtowels? (Especially if you start looking now for towels) $4.50-$5.00. Not too bad.

How about a basket for a would be crafter? Some bottles of acrylic paints, stencils, brushes and an instruction book? A skein of yarn and crochet hook or kniting meedles and an easy pattern.

Or for a country decorator? A sugar and creamer made from graniteware? Some country dishtowels or potholders, a pot of herbs and/or a book about herbs or country decorating. Candles or a bag of potpourri you made yourself.

Or a basket with things for a manicure and pedicure...bottles of nail polish, a file, a foot brush, foot or hand cream, a pumice stone, cuticle cream, foot soak and a bottle of essential oil to add to the foot bath.

Or a bedtime basket for children. Story books, a stuffed animal, pillow cases with their favorite character, new pajamas, slippers, a C.D. of calming Disney music?

For a teenage girl, a bottle of cologne, jewelry, decorate hat boxes for her room, picture frames, room spray, a sleep pillow filled with her favorite scent, a new telephone book, or journal with an ink pen.

Someone going through a bad time...a journal and pen, a tussie mussie, room spray, candles,a house plant, muffins or cookies, a pretty cup and saucer, some tea or flavored coffee, a chicken soup for the soul book, a book of prayers and a Bible.

Great Ideas! One year we got round cheeseboxes from a local grocer and filled with jars of my husbands famous homemade bar-be-que sauce, baster, grill lighter, apron and various types of grill seasoning. The men in family loved it! The homemade jarred sauce adds a more personal touch.

I think everyone likes the little bit of homemade touch in a gift. One year, for Christmas, I asked my 5 sisters to draw names but the gifts had to be homemade. Boy, did they kick up a fuss! But they all did great. We produced some beautiful things for each other. What a nice holiday that was, Your gifts sound terrific.

I love gift baskets. I usually put whatever snacks & chocolates they like/ coffee's teas etc. / maybe some lottery tickets or gift cards / those little gifty things you get at target or kmart that have meaningful sayings or poems about daughters, friends, etc. / toiletry items ets. Generally whatever they like.

Being 28 she is probably busy. What about a box of her fav hot tea, cocoa or coffee, come new colorful mugs, some of her fav muffins or cookies and some candles. Throw in a cd with some of her fav music and you have a relaxation basket.

I would have said a Borders gift card, but I'm trying NOT TO START MY DAY OFF BY CRYING....So how about a copy of "Black heels to Tractor Wheels" if she is unmarried or a copy of "Why my third husband will be a dog" if she is divorced/ recently single.

Ooh love the idea of some nice stationery or a notepad and pen. Vera Bradley has some adorable stuff in that vein.

Perfume...at $60 and up that is one thing I almost never buy for myself. But...you have to know her favorites. Gift card to Sephora would rock too. L'Octaine has great hand creams too. I'm not a big Vera Bradley fan nor am I a designer bag person but if she is, little wallets or clutches by Beta, Coach, Kate Spade. Best thing about being in my late 20s was I was no longer attached to college stuff...I was making enough $ that I could take some of the disposable income and go beyond Forever 21 and H&M and CVS and get a few nicer things or investment pieces.

Magazine subscriptions are great- just buy one of the mag , then make a cute card to say she's now getting a whole yr. And wine- I am 29 and enjoy a good bottle of wine on the weekends, or rough weeknights:)

well I just turned 30 and I would like itunes gift card, starbucks gift card, opi nail polish, a nice soy candle with a lid, my fav candy, really yummy chocolate, any of my makeup, anything a little expensive that I might enjoy but probably wouldn't splurge on like really cute notepad, or nice nail file and cuticle cream, or nice moisturizer or lotion - you get the idea - nicer versions of the stuff I use everyday. oh and magazines everyone loves magazines!

Hmmm, how about minutes for her cell phone through a gift card from her provider?

Some great ideas above. In addition, I would add little luxuries or certificates to services that she might indulge in herself: a beautiful stationery set & pen, the latest must have beauty product from Chanel or Dior, anything in the gourmet food section at William Sonoma...

I love Chris' idea of a framed old photo of the two of you! What a great gift, Chris! Wine, and gift certificates for a mani/pedi would work in ANY gift basket for me, as well, no matter what age! Hope she has a wonderful birthday!
