10 gifts to Promote Cultural Awareness

As our world is rapidly becoming more culturally diverse, the holiday season is a great opportunity to promote cultural awareness. Since 9/11 cultural intolerance has risen and the need for education is at an all-time high. The upcoming season is a time where knowledge and education can be shared in a relatively non-invasive way - through books, jewelry and food – things that we all share in common, but might not be aware of all the variances. The holiday season is also a great time to support business by purchasing items that are a specialty to a particular cultural community. ...more

Confessions of an Insomniac: Here come the holidays

The holidays have crept into my apartment. Fake plastic pine needles are neatly sprinkled throughout my living quarters as my tree sparkles with Christmas cheer. All talk and no action … As I set my pumpkin on the porch in early October, I am already dreaming of Santa and his eight tiny reindeer. I vow every year to have my tree up before Thanksgiving. And, just like clock work, my laziness kicks in and nothing happens. This year was not the exception. Read the rest of this entry >> ...more

Ten Gift Ideas for Spiritual Folks

I was asked to write about 10 Great Holiday Gifts for Spiritual People. Then I had to figure out who, exactly, was that spiritual person. I decided that was someone who would value content over form, meaning over monetary value. Some of the holiday gifts I suggest are explicitly Christian in nature, but most are not. That is because spirituality at the holidays is not limited to observing Christians. When the holidays are doing their magic, there is a big and wonderful spirit that settles in. ...more

Top 10 Money Gifts

It’s that time of year when the media reports on Wall Street bonuses. While many of the large investment banks are busy divvying up the proverbial money pie, most American workers will be receiving zilch this holiday season. According to Forbes, the year-end bonus is practically extinct and those companies that still offer bonuses don’t always give cash: About 27 percent will give their workers food, since nothing says “I appreciate you” like a 12-pound ham. Another 37 percent will give gift certificates, and only 39 percent will actually distribute some dough. While the average cash bonus is worth $837, gift certificates are worth $37 on average and hunks of meat are only $24. Seems like someone told Santa that workers don’t like money anymore. So since cash handouts are few and far between, here’s a list of money-related gifts that you can forward to your boss or bookmark as a trigger before shopping for that financially-savvy person in your life. ...more
