My dear sweet sister Mary died on December 10th. After our mother died in 2001, Mary was the closest thing I had to a mother. I am the youngest of nine children, and, although I still have several living siblings, this loss - especially so close to the holidays - has been very hard to bear. I remember Mary as a fiercely independent woman who loved to truly experience life, travel, have adventures, and had a marvelously demented sense of humor. Her decline and death has left a hole in my heart, and it will take a long time for that to heal. ...more

Watch Your Eye! I Might Pop A Button!

Over the past 2-3 months my pants have slowly grown tighter. I step on the scale and I see my numbers go up. I am helpless when it comes to the holidays. It's the food. My god the delicious, wonderful, butter filled, sugar coated, fat saturated, food. I love it all. From the turkey on Thanksgiving to the shrimp on New Years Eve I am someone who always partakes in ALL of the holiday feasts. It's not only the food that gets me, it's also the drinks. I enjoy the dark stouts, egg nogs, and wonderful wines with little regard to the sea of calories packed in every glass. ...more

Spinning Out, alienated blogger! help...?

I started my first blog in I believe it was 2002. It was awhile ago.  My friend Amanda told me about LiveJournal and said it was a good way to meet people.  I was wandering like a lost soul at the time, and I jumped on there and quickly met new people.  I took a bit of a pause, and now I've come back and everyone and their granddaughter has a blog, and I feel a bit devoured by technology.  I don't know if saying this aloud will help or make a difference, but well, I've said it...  Nighty night! ...more

Need a Pick-Me-Up? Try Energizing Your Environment

Wow, I haven’t worked out in a week. And it hasn’t been on purpose either, i.e. I didn’t have a scheduled break in my routine. I’ve just found myself being uninspired and quite blatantly lazy. Do you ever find yourself stuck in that mode? The weather outside is depressing, it’s pitch black when you wake up in the morning, and you’re so busy that when your day is over all you want to do is crash on the couch and veg out in front of your favorite TV show? ...more

Jesus Warms My Soul

"You have made summer and winter."  Psalm 74:17 It's already winter out there, no matter what the calendar says!! Ice storms in the Northeast, snow in the South, blizzards, and tons of Arctic air "flowing down from the North" are enough to put any global warming arguement to rest, at least for now! In God's word, we're assured that seasons will remain until the end of time, and those seasons are actually from God. ...more

Can The Internet Save Your Life?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the blogging community can be a lifesaving resource for new moms (and soon-to-be-moms and been-there-done-that moms and everyone in between and beyond.) That's my Internet - a community of caring peers who are always there to provided support and caring and practical help. But what about the Internet that stood by and watched a young man broadcast his suicide on YouTube? What is it that separates the nurturing Internets from the ones that scream 'jump! jump!' at a young man on a virtual ledge? ...more

Thankgiving & the Circle of Life

Thanksgiving is a time where we gather with our loved ones to give thanks for all our blessings.  I'm not usually particularly fond of holidays, as the fuss and hustle and bustle drive me batty, but today is a different.  This Thanksgiving, is different.  Today, I go see my Grandmother, for what is probably the last time.  ...more
