Green Obama

As President Bush announced yet another bail-out, this time for American automakers, it's hard to remember that there are other important problems that will need some serious attention when the administration takes over in January. ...more

Have a Greener Halloween

A friend was telling me the other day that she can’t believe how much ‘stuff’ people in Northern California buy for Halloween. She is from a small town in Southern California and they never bought costumes or make-up. They would just make their own from old clothes and maybe put charcoal on their faces. She has a good point. Our love affair with buying things for any occasion is out of control, and likely not just in Northern California. When looking at greener solutions to your typical Halloween Holiday, consider the basics and what you really need to have fun. ...more

More Choices Than Ever Before – The Alternative Cars of the Future

America imports about 70 percent of its oil, costing over $700 billion dollars a year. This last summer, Al Gore challenged America to “commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years.” We know that the energy crisis will not solve itself; therefore, we must do what we can to reach this goal and free America from its dependency. This year, the Santa Monica AltCar Expo featured nearly one hundred energy efficient vehicles as well as demonstrated new cleaner technologies. Attendees were able to ride and drive many of the vehicles on display, allowing them to see and feel the difference. For those of you who missed out, the Expo will also be held at the Palmers Event Center in Austin, Texas October 17 and 18. ...more

Getting Clean and Natural

We live in a pretty dirty world, and I’m not just talking about political mud slinging. Getting clean is a tricky subject. Many personal care products in the general marketplace use harsh chemicals that can harm you and strip your body of good bacteria.      ...more

What was Camp Lejeune Feeding Us?

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune's water supply was contaminated from 1957 to 1987 with trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE), the former a degreasing solvent and the latter a cleaning solvent, both often used in dry cleaning (and the cleaning of weapons). My husband, who was enlisted at the time, said that they cleaned their weapons with TCE and dumped the remaining cleaner on the ground. They were told "it never happened" because they were improperly disposing of the cleaner. ...more

Icky Ingredients

I'm a label reader.  I am that person in the grocery store or pharmacy who stands there in the aisle, dazed look on her face, as she studies the tiny writing on the backs of jars and boxes.  I'm the person who peels back the little sticker at the bottom of a tub of concealer or on the side of a lipstick to see the listed ingredients.  At least 75% of the time, the item I'm studying ends up back on the shelf. ...more

Eco Stress. What Can We Do?

'Eco stress' is fast becoming a phrase commonly used.  People and especially parents are becoming more and more concerned with the state of our planet.  The biggest question is what kind of a planet are we leaving for our children?  With the ice caps rapidly melting and many species heading toward extinction due to climate change, will our children be safe in this future world?  How can we ensure that they will l ...more

The Soap Dilemma

How do I choose a chemical free soap?  Which soap is eco-friendly even after I send it down the drain?  Recently, the Organic Consumers Association, reported they tested several detergents and body care products for 1-4 dioxane.  They found different levels of this chemical in many natural products and products that report to contain some organic ingredients.  1-4 dioxane has been shown to cause cancer.  The concerning part is the FDA acknowledges this and does not identify any safe level for ...more

One Hundred Miles To Better Health

I gave birth six weeks ago. Since then, I've lost a lot of the baby weight. Partly because the baby that I was carrying was so huge that his expulsion from the womb represented a massive weight loss, and partly because I've hardly been able to eat anything since he was born, what with his unremitting need to be held ALL THE TIME HOLY HELL. Hardly anything but cookies, that is, and maybe the odd bagel or two. Which, you know, is not the best post-partum diet. ...more
