Some headlines just beg a clicking, for better or for worse. Marriage: America’s best antidote to child poverty, was one of those. In this piece, the Heritage Foundation presents the argument that because a disproportionate number of families with children living in poverty are single parent ones versus married ones, the United States should advance policies that promote and reward marriage. I'd like to talk about a major issue in my life right now. It's a downer, so prepare yourself.So, I'm poor. I know I have said that before but when I say I am poor, I mean we survived last year on less than $6,000 income. Like super poor.And one would think, "Oh, you're taken care of by the state," but nope.  If you don't have kids and you are poor, you can pretty much go fuck yourself... which apparently I have done by becoming ill while poor....more

A Boy Named Daniel

During the last few miles of the half marathon, I was suffering.  The long hills of Kampala had taken their toll on me, and I was beginning to fade.  John Huddle, one of my half marathon buddies turned and asked me, “Steph, who are you running for?”  In between gasps for air (we were headed up one of those brutal hills) I said, “I am running for Daniel.”  With that in mind, I kept going....more
