Then vs Now

My kids take their lunches to school in stainless steel, eco-friendly containers with thermoses for drinks. My back-to-school ritual included going to the store with my mom and buying a lunchbox every year. It was always a square tin thing, often with popular figures on it. I also got new clothes every year for back to school, and it is a ritual we don't do at all with our kids. They wear what they already have.
Back to School!
Going back to school seems like such a long time ago. As my mom used to day, breakfast was the most important meal of the day. Sometimes I would get breakfast steaks, rice, and scrambled eggs. The good stuff. I also remember my least favorite which was vienna sausages with rice. I used to wrap them up in my napkin when my mom wasn't looking and throw them away. Good times.
I can't wait until my 2 year old starts pulling those shenanigans.

School is back for all 3 of them
New school's new grades its that time again to make the lunches and drive them to school yepeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
lunch boxes
I wish I had held on to some of those lunch boxes. My favorite was the red barn with animals painted all around it.
Back in the Day...
I can remember the excitement of back to school when I was younger. The thrill of a new wardrobe - you never wanted to be caught in "last year's" attire. We had "school bags" not backpacks or satchels. You got your list of required materials after school started.
Today? Well, let's see, my one son is in year-round school so he only gets a week between grades. He gets three days off before there is an open house and in those three days we've already gotten our supply list and classroom wish list. Back to school starts in June rather than September like it was for me! We don't do a back to school wardrobe shopping because you kind of lose the excitement of going back and seeing everyone when you've only been gone a week!
My other son is homeschooled so...well, he doesn't need a new wardrobe, we buy as needed and the classroom wish list? Well, a guess a new TV or computer could pass for that!

clothes
I remember the peer pressure about dressing, especially for girls. It was a total no-no to "repeat" any outfit in the same week.
When i was your age...
Hehe, my son goes to daycare and gets breakfast and a ride on the bus to and from school. When i was younger we had to walk 2 miles, with no breakfast. Kids today dont realize how good they have it.
in my day
I never thought I'd be tempted to say, "when I was a kid . . . "
I've had to bite my tongue more than once.
Back in the day and Now
When I first went to college - I got my coffee at the student Union fir a quater a cop.
Starbucks is a bit more expensive.
Then vs. now
When I was a kid, there was a flurry of activity - a whole new wardrobe was purchased, new shoes. I have no recollection of buying school supplies at all!
With my kids, I stagger buying clothes because my boys always seem to have a growth spurt between August and September! I have been burned three times with shoes or clothes not fitting by mid September(boys!).
The thing that I find really shocking is the list of supplies! It is enormous! And of course they need to have it all the first week of school even if they don't actually need it until spring! Luckily the school offers all the items for purchase - and I take advantage every year! So much easier than shopping at six different stores trying to find the right calculator!
I take photos of the kids before school on the first day of school. I love looking over the photos and see how they have grown!
Then vs Now
I'd probably have to say the biggest difference between myself and my kids is how I'd have everything meticulously laid out the night before (everything from my clothes to my school supplies) and ready to go for the first day of school.
Now it finds something to wear and try to remmeber to grab everything at the last minute as they are running late.
Back in the day...
Shopping for school supplies is a lot more complicated. When I went shopping you just got the pee-chee folders and a couple of generic spiral bound notebooks, and the usual pink eraser (and the school always gave you a new box of crayons). Now when I shop with my kids, whole sections of the store are dedicated to school supplies...and you actually get a list of what is needed so that you don't forget anything!
hmm
walked to school- and it was far- now they seem to need rides and take the bus instead of walking
shopping was easier I think becuase we just needed the basics and bought in school bookstore now its a huge list including kleenex

backpacks
I rarely used a backpack, just not that many books. Now they use rolling backpacks because of how much they have to haul around.
Where to start?
Man, things have really changed since I was in school to now...when my kids are in school. I think one of the major things that has changed is technology is so much more advanced and children are much more adept to using things like the computer, cell phones, etc. Things like "hot lunches" at school have changed (they are much healthier and better for the child) since I was in school too. Having this new laptop would be great for our family...we do not own one yet.

My mom always got my brother
My mom always got my brother and I a special new outfit for the first day. I did that with my own kids. I also took a photo of my three boys each year waiting for the bus on the first day.
Back To School - HAAA!
I remember when our back to school preparations included new clothes and new pencils/papers, etc. Now - OMG! Besides a freakin fashion show it includes new electronics, environmentally-friendly everything, and to suggest they eat in the cafeteria might as well be telling them to eat grass.
School Supplies
Wow. I am really showing my age here, but we had rulers, pencils, paper and maybe markers.
Now my grandson has a laptop and a calculator.
Then Vs. Now
We didn't have a lot of money back then so my mom struggled with the school supplies. Usually she bought a bunch of the plain folders (no fancy designer Lisa Frank ones for me) and a bunch of plain #2 pencils. She also got some cheap glue and crayons and a few other things. We'd make a big pile on the livingroom floor and everyone would grab what they needed. With five of us kids, there was bound to be one greedy one each year (not me, of course! ).
Now my kids get their own supplies based on the list the school gives us, and yep, it's usually the high end stuff. I don't mind, though. It's fun going shopping with each kid and I'd rather waste a few dollars on fancy school supplies than something else.
My Mother always bought
My Mother always bought back to school clothes. I don't buy Gracie back to school clothes because Gracie gets new clothes when she needs them.
Thanks!
Sonya
It wasn't about the labels...
Back when i could remember going school shopping, for me the labels did not matter. I think I was more excited getting the new school supplies, especially my book bag and lunch box and finding out who was in my class. These days it is a fashion. Everyone wants the nname brand stuff.
I went to public schools
I went to public schools which was a living hell and absolutely hated every minute of it. It destroyed my self esteem and I didn't learn anything beyond the very simple basics. My kids are/will be homeschooled and enjoy learning.
We walked to school, rain or
We walked to school, rain or shine and ate real cafeteria food...no pizza and pop machines. And what ever happened to paste lol.
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PASTE?
Well, from what I remember, we used to eat it! LOL .. sorry, couldn't resist a reply...
Blessings to all ...

We wore what was bought....
We didnt get to choose what we wanted to wear, we wore what my mother bought us. Now, its all about what the kids want to wear. Expensive shoes, shirts and pants. And we brought lunch to shcool, we didnt get to eat lunch at school every day. No play dates either. Go outside, find a friend and play.
thank you

in my time
when i went back to school i took with me-lined paper, 8 count box of crayons, dull childrens sisscors, 2 #2 pencils. paste , an eraser and a pg, when my daughter went to school, she has to have a calculater, 5 notebooks, a computer disc, graphing paper, notebook cards, highlighters and pencils, pens and so much more.
No time to work!
I worked my tail off with 3 different part time jobs and ate more tuna and grilled cheese sandwiches than I care to remember. Now my boys somehow have me paying for some of their costs because "they don't have time" to work!!!
I had and my kids have is we
I had and my kids have is we go shopping 1 week before school for new shoes. Now they also get backpacks (when I was a kid we carried our books). I used to love going shoes shopping except for the silver foot measure that we had to do--it tickled.
As kids, my mom would bring
As kids, my mom would bring us school shopping for new shoes and supplies the week before school. We wore uniforms, so we also went to a special store for those.
Now, with my kids, they go to public school and dress in casual pants and shirts. Since the school sales start so early, we shop a little here and there, picking up what's on sale. We don't make a special trip to the stores, but just pick up items as we see them. As a child, we never used backpacks, but this is one item that my kids love to buy. My Mother in Law goes to the store with us and helps the kids each pick out their own backpack and she pays for those. We then all go out to lunch together.
