Spend Less Save More: Avoiding Couponing Mistakes

Are you making couponing mistakes? As a beginning couponer I know I tended to go a bit overboard with how much time and how many coupons I was printing these are just two of the mistakes new couponer make.

Store policy: Be well versed in your favorite store’s coupon policy. You need to know which coupons are accepted in your store. When or if your store doubles or triples coupons. Does your store accept Buy One Get one deals or another store’s coupons. Does your store allow stacking of coupons, stacking is when you use various kind of coupon on one item, such as:

Buy 5 Yoplait Greek Blended Yogurt, 5.3 oz $1.02, regular price

Use four $0.50/1 - Yoplait Greek Yogurt Cups, any variety (tumblr.com)

And use one $1.00/5 - Yoplait Greek Blended Yogurt Cups, 5.3 oz, Target Coupon (target.com)

And use 10% Off – Yoplait Greek Blended Yogurt, Target Cartwheel Offer (exp 2/8) (cartwheel.target.com)

Final Price: $0.36 each, when you buy 5

Remember to have a copy of your store’s coupon policy with you when shopping just in case a cashier is not as prepared as you are.   For your store policy visit the storepolicy page.

Make a budget: Setting a realistic budget set goals by analyzing your grocery bills after a couple of months of shopping, then set goals below your average for a realistic budget. Sticking to a budget is important and remember just because something is on sale doesn’t mean you should buy it unless you need it or use it.  Always take a look at your inventory and your needs before making your list if you do this you will have a realistic budge to keep. For inventory list visit the download page.

When you make a list it’s easier to stick to a budget. One of the biggest mistakes a couponer makes is spotting new items on sale and not using a coupon for it. If you have the coupon for it at home just simply find out how long the sales will last you can even ask the store to hold an item for you if the stock is low and simply come back for the item. This is the season for a great deal of new products and coupons so if you need a coupon visit the coupon source page.

One final mistake couponer make that can cost you more in the long run is not paying with cash. Using any kind of plastic makes it easier to over spend and if you use a credit card you are eating up your savings in interest rates.  Use cash whenever possible and you will find yourself spending less and savings more.
