Spring Organizing Challenge: Day 3

Today's challenge has you going through your house and garage looking for old paint cans, spray paint bottles, automotive fluids and other hazardous waste items that are no longer being used. I just had this done by my husband and asked him to gather them in a box for me to dispose of. It took him all of 3 minutes to figure out what we don't use anymore. However, we often ignore these things when organizing our home. Look at those cans of paint and remember when was the last time the walls were painted pink in your kitchen, or lime green in your bedroom.
I believe a reason we hold on to these cans and bottles is that we simply don't know how to dispose of them. I live in Fargo, ND and I have discovered that you can take these items to be safely disposed of at the hazardous wasted center in Fargo. When I organize client's I offer this as part of my services. You would be surprised how much room old paint cans and chemicals are taking up in peoples homes!
Another thing I discovered is that it is free of charge. Why wouldn't you take the extra effort and get the chemicals out of your home. Let the experts dispose of the items for you instead of simply throwing them in the garbage.
Here is what the city I live in takes:
Fargo residents can bring household hazardous waste to our facility year-round at no charge during regular business hours. Household hazardous waste (HHW) includes items labeled danger, toxic, poisonous, corrosive or flammable such as paints, thinners, stains, varnish, drain and oven cleaners, poisons, automotive fluids, weed and insect killer, fluorescent light bulbs and ballasts, etc. These materials (in household quantities), among others, are accepted at the city's permanent HHW facility.
You may need to make a call or do a web search to find out the particulars in your city, but take the extra time and get those chemicals out of your home in a safe manner and not just dumped in our landfill.

Before you can tackle your Spring Cleaning you must first get your Spring Flinging done, or as I like to call it “Spring Green Fling”, because I want you to be green as you are getting rid of the items that no longer are going to be in your home. I am going to challenge my readers and followers on facebook to join me as we get organized before we start our Spring Cleaning.
