Are you addicted to soda? I'm not, but I know many people who are. I know one person who can only get through work if she has a 2-liter bottle of cola on her desk. That's a lot of empty calories.
My advice...take it slow. If you're addicted to "x" number of sodas a day, try to reduce that number slowly. Especially, if they are caffeinated sodas. Caffeine and sugar are both addicting, and stopping cold turkey will most likely result in headaches and other unpleasant symptoms. But gradually reducing your intake, will increase your chances of success.
If you only drink soda occasionally, just stop, and say no to soda forever.
I read somewhere that a person who stops drinking soda, can lose up to ten pounds over the course of year, without dieting. If you're a soda drinker, give it a try and let me know how you make out.

Former sodaholic
It can be done. I don't recall the last time I drank a high-calorie-sugar-dump "real" soda, but I used to drink loads of the diet variety. I slowly weaned myself off of it and actually now prefer water or iced diet green tea. Good advice! Thanks.

Oh, the sugar, caffeine and
Oh, the sugar, caffeine and chemicals in soda. If we could get rid of just this one substance I think America would be infinitely more healthy! I say, drink tea!

You Are So Right
You are so right. I gave up sugary caffeinated soda in 2004 and, after 6 weeks of withdrawal headaches, dropped 20 lbs. Just like that.
I kept off of all soda for a couple of years; now the diet variety has re-entered my life. I drink about a 2-liter every 3 days. It's time to stop.

Not a soda drinker but coffee lover
I only drink soda when I'm out. But I don't drink soda at home or at work. For some reason, I don't crave for it. But I am kinda addicted to coffee. I mean I need 2-3 cups a day of coffee. But I don't use those artificial sweeteners, I use brown sugar instead because it healthier.I guess it will take time before I can drink black coffee. But how come they said coffee is good and has antioxidant properties? Was it all propaganda? ^_^

Addicted, I admit it!
I only drink diet soda, but still I know it's not a good habit. I try to limit myself to two per day, I'm not sure if I could ever quit it completely.

No soda..
Somehow I never got on the soda as an every day drink routine. Maybe it's because I like water; maybe it's because I was often poor and soda came out of my entertainment budget (it is not food, cannot come out of my food budget). So the choice would be a bottle of soda during the day or an evening in a pub with friends and one beer. I'd choose the pub and company every time.
I am a coffee/tea drinker so I'm getting the caffeine, but I figure that's one of my very few vices. I could give it up if I had to, but then all I'd be drinking is water? (and beer?)

Weight for Deb
Besides the calories the effect on blood
sugar is horrible.
I work with a nutrition professor who is an evangelist about the evils of soda...her presentations are frightening, actually.
I'm trying to cut down for weight reasons but also because of the diabetes that runs in my family and I figure it can't be good to be pumping liquefied sugar into my bloodstream. I did develop the habit of drinking Coke as a child and it's very hard to stop, I have to say. Like anything else it requires conscious effort. Sometimes I'm better at it than others. I do try to substitute diet for a couple of reasons, one that the calories and sugar content obviously go down, the other is that I don't really like it so if that's my only option I'm less likely to take it.
Mind games, over here, pretty much.

My Body Craves Aspartame!
I went off regular sodas years over twenty years ago and substituted them with diet colas.
Now I'm trying to ween myself off diet colas too. Not only do I CRAVE the aspartame, I don't think it's good for a woman's body. I'm trying to only drink two cans/week. But I gotta tell ya, I crave it ALMOST (but not quite) as much as milk chocolate. mmmmm
Maybe I just need sex:)
Because a woman's body never lies...
This is a tough one for me
I've never been a fan of full sugar soda, but diet pop is my downfall. I've given it up too many times to count. Only once did I try cold turkey, and I thought I might die, the headaches were so bad. I've given it up slowly too, and even stayed off it for months, but it creeps back in. I know it's bad for me, and my kids give me a hard time about my addiction. I probably at 3 a day, but it's been worse.
I would love to only drink water.

Unexpected Bliss
I kicked the soda habit
I kicked the soda habit once. I was a non-caffeine soda junkie. I found it is not just kicking the soda habit, but replacing it with water that helps most. This fills you with a natural cleanser and helps to detox your body of the....toxins. I see it work in men quickly in term of weight loss, but in women it makes you healthy. You see the progress over time and the benefits out weigh the cravings. Good luck!

Anything carbonated
is supposed to demineralize your bones and increase your risk of osteoporosis, according to something I read. That's why I stopped drinking soda. Do you know if that is accurate information, Catherine?

Dissolves Battery Acid
I gave up soda and the pounds came off fast. The clincher for me was when I poured some Coke on a battery and watched it dissolve the acid. I figured that I shouldn't drink a beverage that dissolves battery acid.

soda is poison, people!
Great post! One of the hardest challeneges I have as a personal trainer is weaning people off diet soda. One client of mine lost 5 inches off her waist in 30 days, simply by stopping the soda.
And no I'm not kidding, it's true. Dr. Oz's book does a great explanation of how soda affects the bodys metabolisim.
I beg anyone who is trying to lose weight to get off ALL soda!

I really want to stop
I really want to stop drinking the soda, but haven't seriously tried that hard. I have, however, stopped drinking soda with aspartame in it. I discovered it was giving me massive, nightly headaches. When I cut out the aspartame, the headaches stopped. Try it!
A co-worker recently told me that she drinks sparkling water (perrier) instead of pop. It's carbonated water. So you think you are drinking a pop, but it has 0 calories. If you want or need flavor, spritz a slice of lime in it.
I'm going to try it!
