Start Your Own Little Free Library
By kidcultureaustin on October 13, 2012
Does your child have loads of books that he or she has outgrown that are just sitting and gathering dust?
Would you like a way to easily get access to new free books to read in between your trips to the local library?
Are you looking for a way to get more connected to your community?
Here's a fantastic way to promote early literacy and build community in your neighborhood, in addition to being a fun project to do with your child. The basic idea is that you start your own little lending library right in your front yard! It's a movement called Little Free Library, and the idea arose from the desire of one man to pay tribute to his book-loving mother. I love everything about this idea--it's just so darn precious!
Check out littlefreelibrary.org for tips on how to get started, plans to help you build your own, ideas for getting the neighborhood involved, and lots more helpful information. They even have a photo gallery of existing libraries and their proud owners. If you're not up to taking on a DIY project, there are models that you can purchase.
Little Free Library's Mission:
- To promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide.
- To build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity, and wisdom across generations
- To build more than 2,510 libraries around the world - more than Andrew Carnegie--and then more."
Do you have a Little Free Library in your neighborhood? Plan to start one? Tell us about it!
