The other day while reading the book of Hebrews. I came across chapter four which addressed the Sabbath Rest. At first, I was a bit confused. I wondered if God was talking about an actual day. If he was, 3/4 of the Christian Church had it wrong and needed to switch days quickly. While I continued my studies, I came to realize that the Sabbath rest being addressed here was the one where we’ll be with Jesus in our new heavenly home.
In Chapter 3, we are reminded how the Israelites were purposely allowed to circle the desert for 40 years because they were a generation that angered God by their rebellion. If you know the story of the Israelites and Moses, you know that these people would drive any leader mad. THEY COMPLAINED ABOUT EVERYTHING. Though they saw the handiwork of God, they lacked faith in Him. Because of their lack of faith and disobedience, they were not allowed to enter the promise land -the Sabbath Rest.
Like the Israelites, we too are on a journey to the promise land. Jesus told us that he is going to prepare a place for us, so that where he is we may also be. However, we are not guaranteed entrance. We need to continue on in faith, obey his commands, serve him with gladness and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. A well-known Gospel singer, Canton Jones, says it best -Gotta stay Saved. Though we are saved, we must STAY saved. This is not a one-shot set for life do whatever I want deal. We must continue on in faith and walk like Jesus if we are to remain SAVED.
As God ended his work by resting on the seventh-day, we too have a Sabbath-day rest awaiting us at the end of our work. God sincerely wants us to enter this rest, but we must be obedient to his voice and combine our knowledge of him with faith in him. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to be left to walk in circles because of my disobedience. I want to be part of that generation that is allowed to enter the land flowing with milk and honey. I want to be that generation that gets to see the blessing that God promised to Abraham. I don’t want to just to know Word, I want to LIVE IT.
Let us continue to persevere in our ministries, our families, our marriages, our relationships, OUR WALK WITH GOD. For at the end of the journey, we will enter the Sabbath Rest. Wouldn’t you like to finally rest from all of your work and just be with God? If you answered yes, then stay steadfast and keep your eyes fixed on the ultimate prize. One day soon, God will welcome you into your rest.
For anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience. – Hebrews 4:10-11
Lord, thank you for reminding me that your are preparing a place for me and at the end of my journey, I will be welcomed into the Sabbath-rest. Teach me to persevere and to remain focused on the prize. Strengthen my resolve to be steadfast and order my steps daily….
