Stop Sabotaging Your Joy

Did you know there is a difference between being happy and having joy? According to Merriam Webster the definition of happy is favored by luck or good fortune and joy is defined as a state of well-being. In other words, happiness is dependant on a situation whereas joy can exist regardless of our circumstance. Unfortunately all too often our joy is depicted based on how happy we are.

I have struggled for many years with the desire to be happy. You know the saying, “If momma ain’t happy….” I was sucking the joy right out of my family with this man-made quest to be dependant on someone or something to make me happy. I failed to be content with the joy in the right here, right now. Of course once I learned the difference I have had joy in my heart ever since, right? Um-Not so much.

The truth is it is one thing to understand the difference and another to live it out. We can read our Bibles and know all the right answers but it means nothing if we are not putting it into action. Let me tell you, it’s hard to be filled with joy all the time. Our biggest obstacle is ourselves. It’s true. We constantly sabotage our own joy.

Think about it for a minute. Have you ever had complete joy over a rock star mom moment and lost that joy when a friend’s moment was bigger than yours? Have you ever failed to appreciate a gift, circumstance or accomplishment because it wasn’t perfect? Have you let your hurt and pain from a loved one get in the way of loving others? I have.

What causes us to sabotage our joy? I’m glad you asked because I made a list. For me, the following are my greatest nemesis:

*Comparison

*Unreasonable Expectations

*The Lack of Contentment

*Unforgiveness

As we set our hearts on being thankful everyday in November, I thought it would be just as useful to open our eyes to the attacks of Satan. Every Friday this month I will tackle one of these nemesis. We will learn how they are sabotaging us and what we can do reclaim our joy. Are you ready to live in a joyful state?
