Straight, Smooth Hair in Humid Florida Weather? Sure, Why Not?

This is a compensated review from BlogHer and Liquid Keratin.

I don't exactly have a problem with my hair being curly, or even wavy for that matter. A rogue section might decide to flip out rather than under on occasion, but that's about as "curly" as it gets. However, that doesn't mean I don't fight flyaways -- after all, I live in Florida, where the humidity generally hovers around 500 percent. (Okay, I have no idea what the average is, but more often than not, it's high.)

The thing is, I'm not going to spend a ton of money on a fancy salon treatment to straighten my hair, because it's already straight. But, I'm always looking for shortcuts and products to keep the frizzies at bay, because there's nothing less attractive than flat, straight hair with flyaways from root to tip. Trust me.

In the past, I relied on products like Biosilk and Bain de Terre, which are both fairly lightweight serums that provide enough weight to tame frizzies, and, as long as you don't use too much, keep your hair looking healthy and shiny. (Seriously, don't use too much, or you'll look like you just came from an oil slick. Not that I know anything about that.) However, the downside to these products is that it leaves my hair a little too soft and heavy to get much volume, so I end up using far too many products to get some lift, and invariably, I end up disappointed.

When I had a chance to try out the Liquid Keratin Haircare System, I was pretty pumped. It promises to help you "defy your dna" by turning even frizzy, curly, difficult hair into hair that's frizz free and easy to style however you want. Even if you live in 500 percent humidity. (Okay, they don't actually say that, but that's what they mean.)

I got the 30 Day Straight-Smooth-Strong & Long Starter Kit, which is what I would definitely recommend -- it has everything you need to get super smooth hair in 30 minutes (well, 30 minutes one day and then using special shampoo and conditioner a couple of days later). After the treatment (which, truthfully, is easy), independent clinical lab studies showed that hair had 100 percent less frizz, 70 percent less curl, and was 25 percent longer, with results lasting as long as six weeks.

I didn't notice my hair being longer, but it's still really sleek, even if I don't use a flat iron. In fact, since using Liquid Keratin (about two weeks ago, now), I've only used my trusty iron to create some flips with the ends of my hair -- it can't really get much smoother.

Is it the same as a fancy schmancy salon treatment? Nope, not quite. But, considering you can get the entire starter kit for $69 at Beauty.com, and that starter kit will last for several treatments, I think it's well worth the money. It even has me thinking about growing my hair out a bit. I mean, hey, why not? If it's going to be this easy to style, I can do anything!

Still, I'd love to know what products or treatments you all are using, and how pricey they are. Because, ladies, 500 percent humidity. That's all I have to say.

Thank you so much for sharing! My stylist has been trying to get a Keratin treatment at the salon but it cost $300! I don't have that kind of money! I just ordered this at home treatment, I hope it works just as well! I will let you know!

Shalilah I don't think any shampoo really stops curly hair from curling.  It just makes it less frizzy and the curls smother.  That's what Nexus and Paul Mitchell does for me.

I've tried so many different shampoos and conditioners.  If you want your hair really straight you have to relax it or live with the blow dryer and curling iron everyday.

Right now I'm leaving mine curly.

Thanks so much for the review!  My hair's naturally wavy & I'm sooo tired of using the flat iron.  The system's a little pricey, but i may just have try it out :)

Honestly, I don't know. But, I have friends with curly hair -- maybe I'll get them to try it, and then I'll report back!

I'm intrigued. But also a little mystified -- how do they measure curl?? If I use this, will I have larger, looser curls (rather than the tight ringlets the humidity tends to bring out)? Because I would pay well over $69 for no frizz and looser curls....

Holly, it's SO MUCH MORE than just shampoo. I mean, there's shampoo and conditioner, yes, but there's also a whole separate deep conditioner, and some leave-on spray stuff that you use before styling the first time (or any time you really, REALLY want to knock the frizzies on their butts), so it seriously is a whole system. A system that lasts a while, because you only use it once a month or so!

Because I'm with you -- $69 for shampoo? My hair isn't THAT picky! (Well, it is, probably, but my pockets aren't that deep!)

I saw the Liquid Keratin ad in a magazine, looked it up online, and gasped at the price of the 30-day kit. I wondered if I should really spend that much on shampoo! But I live in Florida too, and summer's a-coming. I'm with you -- waves and curls are fine, but the frizz has got to go.
