The #BlogHer17 Voices of the Year Call for Submissions Is Open

BlogHer Original Post

Today, we open submissions for the #BlogHer17 Voices of the Year, to be honored at the #BlogHer17 annual conference this June in Orlando. This year is the tenth anniversary of Voices, or VOTY ("voh-tee"), as we like to call it!

#BlogHer17 Voices of the Year submissions are open

Each year, we recognize a special group of content creators as our official BlogHer Voices of the Year. Of the honorees, a small group will be selected to share their work onstage during the Community Keynote session that closes out the day on Friday, June 23, 2017. Joining our honorees on stage this year as the VOTY emcee will be the incredible Janet Mock.

The best part of VOTY is how YOU get excited and help us find the memorable, heart-stopping, brilliant, hilarious content of the past 12 months that deserves to be heard, seen, and read. I'm constantly in awe of the visual work our talented community creates, like this photo by Jenna Hatfield:

Or this amazing food Instagram feed by Jennifer Reidy, and this totally girl power video by Jennifer Borget (whose appearance on stage with her son was part of the magic of last year's Community Keynote).

And I love that we honor the activists who made an impact online over the last year, like the incredible anti-bullying work by Lizzie Velasquez. But I'm a writer, and my favorite part is the essays. I loved Pamela Valentine's story of learning she's the mom of a transgender child. And Clementine Bhiga's shattering account of her life as a Rwandan refugee. And Nathan James' beautiful essay about his childhood friend Lisa.

Take a look at our rundown of last year's Community Keynote and all the 2016 honorees—they're all worth exploring, and serve as a great example of the kinds of work we like to honor at BlogHer.

Just as we're the conference the community made, this is the keynote and awards the community made—and it's been a life-changing experience for many of our honorees. I hope it will be for you, too.

This year's submission categories:

  • Written work: Blog posts or online articles of 700 words or fewer. (Eligible for stage reading at the Community Keynote.)
  • Written work: Blog posts or online articles of 700 words or more.
  • Video: on any platform not to exceed six minutes in length. Food videos are welcome, as long as they meet the time requirement. (May be eligible to be shown at the Community Keynote on stage Friday)
  • Eye Candy: Any individual photo or curated visual expression, such as photos, GIFs, memes, Pinterest boards, Houzz idea books, Instagram feeds, etc.
  • Food Photography: Any individual photo specific to food and beverage.
  • Impact: Sometimes impact arises from the aggregation of content and perspective through a hashtag, a meme that goes viral, a group Tumblr, or a call to action that rallies the community around a cause. The impact can be hilarity. The impact can be a collective "awwww." The impact can be to change the world. (Eligible for stage appearance at the Community Keynote.)

We'll work with our judging committee, including former Voices of the Year, the #BlogHer17 Community Advisory Board, and leadership from across departments at BlogHer and SheKnows to select the honorees. We have two rounds of judging, and in each round every submission is reviewed by at least two judges.

As in years past, all Voices of the Year will be honored at #BlogHer17 in Orlando during the Community Keynote and Voices of the Year Reception on Friday, June 23, 2017, as well as receive a free conference pass and reserved seating at the Voices of the Year Community Keynote.

DEADLINE: Submissions open today and close at 11:59PM ET on February 3, 2017. Submit your work now!

ELIGIBILITY: Any online work published between January 2016 – present is eligible. You need not be a #BlogHer17 attendee to be a Voices of the Year honoree.

NOTE: Those who have previously shared their work on stage as part of the Community Keynote are still eligible to be a Voice of the Year honoree, but appearing in the Community Keynote portion of VOTY is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

SUBMITTING: You are welcome—in fact, encouraged—to submit your own work, as well as your favorite content by others. You can submit as many different posts as you like, but be sure you have an email address for everyone you submit, so we can contact them if they are selected as an honoree. You must use this form to submit your work.

SELECTION: Honorees are chosen by a committee of past Voices of the Year and staff from across the SheKnows Media team. We thank them for their service. And we warn them to keep the tissues ready:

Finally, check out our VOTY FAQ for more information and details about Voices of the Year.

Ten years of celebrating the best and most amazing in our community. And I'm excited and honored to be leading the charge this year as your new VOTY chair. Be a part of it in 2017 by submitting your best work. We can't wait to continue the Voices of the Year tradition of delivering inspiration! Submit as many posts as you like right now. Good luck!
