So by now you have a pretty good idea that sugar is not the best thing for you and you may be considering a no-sugar diet (especially if you are trying to maintain a diabetic diet). However, you might be wondering what you can substitute your sugar consumption with.

The first thing to remember is that even with sugar substitutes (while not as deadly) they can be harmful to the body if consumed in large quantities. So if you’re used to dropping 6 sugar cubes in your coffee or tea in the morning, don’t substitute it for the equivalent serving of honey or sugar in the raw. Instead you want to break your sweet tooth and then use other sweeteners in moderation.

Honey: Is one of the best forms of sweeteners. Although there is controversy as to whether it is vegan or not (due to the fact that bees manufacture it), many vegans and vegetarians use it as an acceptable substitute for table sugar. More importantly it contains plenty of b-vitamins and other nutrients that aid the body in its daily functions.

Sugar in the Raw: Another healthy substitute, sugar in the raw is great for those who cannot stomach the taste of honey or they just do not want to use it for other reasons. It is a type of granulated sugar, and unlike regular brown/white sugar, it does not go through most of the processes such as bleaching that regular sugar does. Because of this it retains most of its nutrients.

Florida Crystal: Another great sugar substitute is Florida Crystal. It has a great taste and unlike Sugar in the Raw which can discolor drinks etc. Florida Crystal is available in both brown and white forms. Thus you can use it in drinks, cakes, etc that you would not want its color distorted.

Maple Syrup: One of the more expensive substitutes, maple syrup is excellent and while sweeter than sugar, again, it contains many vital nutrients to aid the body.
