Summer Means Ice Cream: Some Unusual Flavors to Try
by Kalyn Denny

Beet Ice Cream
Kids and teachers everywhere mark the beginning of summer as the day school ends for the year. Tomorrow is the last day of school for me, so I'm thinking summer, and nothing says summer more than ice cream. Lots of people who love ice cream eventually discover the joy of making their own, but food bloggers seems to especially relish trying unusual and creative flavor combinations. Here are ten flavors you won't find at the local Baskin and Robbins.

First, the stunning colored ice cream in the photo is Beet Ice Cream created and photographed by Lara Ferroni from Cook and Eat, featured in an entertaining post which tells how it was inspired by some beet gelato she sampled in New York City.

Annie from Bon Appegeek says, "If chocolate and hazelnut ran a cult together, I’d shave my head, buy a robe, and get a tattoo." If you understand her feelings about that, don't miss her post on Grand Gianduja Stracciatella Gelato, with links to several other bloggers who also made it.

Simona at Briciole makes Star Anise Ice Cream, translated as Gelato All'anice Stellato. It will sound even better if you click the audio link and hear Simona pronounce it in Italian.

Lots of the ice cream posts I saw featured recipes created by pastry Chef David Lebovitz who's widely recognized as one of the premiere ice cream makers of the culinary world, and you won't find a more unusual ice cream anywhere than his Candied Bacon Ice Cream.

If you know someone who's passionate about the chocolate and hazelnut spread called Nutella, Clothilde at Chocolate and Zucchini can show you how to make Nutella Ice Cream.

Fans of subtly spiced Chai Tea will swoon over the Chai Ice Cream from Simply Recipes.

Matcha is a type of ultra-powdered green tea that's used in cooking, and the Matcha White Chocolate Ice Cream from Steamy Kitchen looks very green and delicious.

Pomegranate is one of my favorite flavors, so I'd love to try Nigella Lawson's No Churn Pomegranate Ice Cream from Pille at Nami Nami.

Anita from Dessert First got my attention with her Lemon Verbena Ice Cream, adapted from Claudia Fleming's recipe.

Finally, from a blog that specializes in unique ice cream comes a flavor I'm quite sure you haven't tried. Ice Cream Ireland has a very intriguing recipe for Blue Cheese and Carmelised Shallot Ice Cream, which Kieran admits is not for everyone.

BlogHer Food and Drink Contributing Editor Kalyn Denny also blogs at Kalyn's Kitchen where she's never made ice cream, but has been thinking about experimenting with a frozen version of Greek Yogurt with Agave Nectar and Pecans this summer.

I've always thought Ice Cream Ireland was an interesting blog, but I couldn't believe it when I saw this one.
