Super Bowl Ad Over TeBlown?

It was hyped, discussed and blogged to death, but the Tim Tebow Super Bowl commercial was hardly the controversy it was made out to be. tebow_story_mainThere wasn’t a “pro-life message” but rather a pro-family message of a son hugging his mom. In fact, if I hadn’t been made “aware” of the ad I doubt it would have even registered on my radar. In a previous post, Cindy asked if I agreed with CBS airing the ad. And The Dallas Morning News asked readers last week a similar question: should CBS pull the ad? If anything, CBS and Focus on the Family could have avoided a controversy all together by simply posting the commercial online before the game (technically it did air during both the game and pre-game broadcast) so people could see for themselves just what kind of message was being sent and they should have invited and offered the opportunity for equal air time to Planned Parenthood who did compose a competing ad online. It was favortism on CBS’s part. Last year, NBC  banned a vegan ad with models and sexually suggestive vegetables because it was inappropriate for family audiences. And a controversial anti-abortion ad was what, dinner conversation, CBS?

But in this case, pro-choice advocates, including myself, saw two conservatives Christians, Focus on the Family and jumped the gun on what the message would be. Yes, both are pro-life but the commercial wasn’t picking a fight over the “a” word. I’m pro-choice and appreciated the commercial for the message it did send: love and family. Do I agree with the politics of many pro-life groups? No. Does it feel like pro-choice people are always made out to be uncaring mothers, baby killers or worse? Yes. Had the Planned Parenthood ad run during the game it would have made a much more of a controversy. CBS should have never let it be an issue and frankly, sometimes we on the other side shouldn’t let a pro-family message be a declaration of war.
