Clam Chowder
Today there's a big football game where New York and New England are competing for a title that some people consider very important. For those who aren't really into football, The Gracious Bowl reminds us that Manhattan and New England have a culinary rivalry that's been going on for years. Of course, they're talking about clam chowder.

There are other clam chowder variations, but even Wikipedia on Clam Chowder says New England or Manhattan are the two main types, and restaurants traditionally serve one or the other. I started this post with good intentions of featuring both clam chowder varieties equally, but it soon became obvious that among food bloggers New England Clam Chowder definitely had the advantage. What's your favorite type of clam chowder, and who do you hope will win the Superbowl?

In the photo we have Maritime Clam Chowder from Brilynn at Jumbo Empanadas, a delicious-looking version of New England clam chowder from a recipe by Michael Smith.

Clam Chowder from Seriously Good is classic New England with potatoes and oyster crackers.

At Cook and Eat, Lara's Calamity Chowder adds non-traditional ingredients like leeks, sunchokes and saffron for a new twist.

New England Potato Clam Chowder from The Well Seasoned Cook is thickened with mashed potatoes.

The Foodie Fashionista has East Hampton Clam Chowder, with Yukon Gold potatoes for a slightly different twist.

From Scratch features Fast Clam Chowder, with a reminder that in New England it's simply called Chowdah "as if Manhattan Clam Chowder, with tomatoes, doesn't even exist."

HelenJane makes Mostly Pantry Clam Chowder with fat-free half and half for a lighter version.

Dani Spies has a video to show us how to make real Manhattan Clam Chowder.

The Manhattan Clam Chowder from Coffee and Cornbread includes carrots and potatoes.

Manhattan Clam Chowder from An Engless Banquet was a childhood favorite.

Got No Milk gives us Vegan Manhattan Clam Chowder.

BlogHer Food Editor Kalyn Denny likes New England Clam Chowder best, but she's making Shrimp and Macaroni Salad for the Superbowl Party today.

I don't mind the cream, but I'm avoiding potatoes and am I right that there are less potatoes in the Manhattan type? That would make it better for me. I must try making some. All the New England people will get me for this, but any chowder with tomatoes has to be more nutritious than one with cream and butter.

Lots of people would be very jealous of that. Personally I would rather go to New England and eat clam chowder than go to a game, no matter what the sport! (I bet we agree on that!)

Growing up in NJ, the chowders were equal in my mind. But now I live in Boston and see so many horrible things done with cream...every restaurant has to have NE clam chowder...and most are not good! As for me, I'm off dairy so my vote definitely has to be with Manhattan!

The Giants literally play their home games ten minutes from me, but my culinary heart belongs Down East. Thanks for the mention, Kalyn, and the other links, too. I enjoy seeing different takes on both classics.

who thinks Manhattan Clam Chowder is just not clam chowder at all! I was laughing at some of the comments I found (all on recipes for New England Clam Chowder of course.)

Three cheers for New England clam chowder and the Pats! I'm in Pennsylvania now, but will always be a Massachusetts girl at heart.

My old job was across the street from a cheese shop that alternated New England and Manhattan clam chowder on Fridays. I'd go in there each Friday and ask, "Which do you have today -- New England chowder or That Red Stuff?" :-)

Best,
Linda.

What a delightful post - super idea - and thank you so much for the mention. As a New Yorker transplanted to New England I love both kinds. Try a few drops of Tabasco in Chowda...takes it to a new level!

To everyone rooting for a team today - Hope your team wins!

Actually the truth is that it doesn't affect my life that much who wins the superbowl, but I like to root for the underdog. For Clam Chowder, I've always had the New England style, but I'd love to try real Manhattan Clam Chowder sometime.

I do want to be sure that credit for the chowder rivalry idea goes to The Gracious Bowl , what a great idea! As soon as I saw their post I knew what I'd be writing about today.

Manhattan works today, especially, because I'm going for the Giants. :) It's a combination of mid-Atlantic pride, the fact that I get bored when the same people win over and over, and there's nothing I love more than an underdog.

I'm a Manhattan fan, for the most part, although I love oyster stew, which is cream-based. Shellfish-based soups are religion for some Maryland families, mine included, and I think because I grew up with tomato-based crab soup, I go for the same kind when clams are involved.

I think I might try the Manhattan recipes. Again, I love how you expand your topic in such creative ways. It makes for great food writing.
