Susan G. Komen Strips Planned Parenthood of Funds for Breast Exams

When I first heard that the Susan G. Komen foundation was screwing over Planned Parenthood I didn't believe it. The nation's most famous breast cancer charity was cutting off its funding to Planned Parenthood because of a right-wing, anti-abortion Congressman?

It sounded absurd. It sounded like some sensationalist story you might read on The Drudge Report. Or a rumor that conservatives might gleefully spread because of their irrational hatred of birth control and sex. Yes, let's smear that elitist-feminist-Nazi breast cancer group with its pretty pink ribbons and its feel-good events, Race for the Cure. Let's accuse them of plotting to cripple Planned Parenthood. Which would have been ridiculous enough, given that Nancy Brinker, Komen's founder and CEO, donated to George W. Bush's presidential campaign.

Only the story was true. Every awful, sad, infuriating word of it, according to an Associated Press story that broke last Tuesday.

Other media outlets confirmed it. NPR reported:

Planned Parenthood says the move results from Komen bowing to pressure from anti-abortion activists. Komen says the key reason is that Planned Parenthood is under investigation in Congress -- a probe launched by a conservative Republican who was urged to act by anti-abortion groups.

This meant that the hundreds of thousands of women who rely on Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screening, who don't have health care or can't afford to see a doctor, would have had to fend for themselves. Go somewhere else. Or maybe forgo those pesky breast exams entirely. All because a group whose mission it is to cure breast cancer decided that its ties to a group helping women prevent breast cancer was politically untenable.

Are you sick yet?

A lot of women were. The backlash was immediate. Within hours, supporters of not just Planned Parenthood but Komen flooded Twitter and Facebook venting their outrage. At least part of the anger was due to Komen’s lame-headed attempt to try to hide the decision. The day the story exploded, I checked on Komen’s website, komen.org, to see if they had a statement about why they’d cut off their grants to Planned Parenthood. Not surprisingly, there wasn’t a word about it. It was all cheery news about the latest race and pitches to donate. I say not surprisingly because Komen broke the news to Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards last December in a phone call, according to the Associated Press. So why would the group be transparent about their actions now?

But on Twitter the reaction to the news was explosive.

Caught off-guard by the fury, Komen scrambled to explain. No, it wasn’t the investigation by a Republican congressman with a long grudge against Planned Parenthood that had triggered the decision. No, it wasn’t because of Karen Handel, a former anti-choice candidate for governor of Georgia and a recent Komen executive. Or that they’d changed their criteria for grants.

The real reason, Brinker told NBC’s Andrea Mitchell, an active supporter of Komen and a breast cancer survivor, was something about wanting to be more efficient and avoid “duplicative grants.” It was nonsense, of course. Did Brinker really believe that was going to cut it with women, women who’ve seen their health care and reproductive choices under relentless attack by state legislatures and Congress?

We now know that, contrary to Komen’s first feeble attempt to explain itself, that for months the charity had been hounded by anti-abortion groups that hate Planned Parenthood. And so, afraid of losing their support from conservatives, Komen threw Planned Parenthood under the bus. And hoped no one would notice. Or care. It was only a few hundred thousand dollars, after all. Only thousands of young, low-income women who would be affected. It was only breast cancer prevention. Big deal.

It was.

On Friday, after two dozen U.S. senators asked Komen to reconsider, after Michael Bloomberg and Lance Armstrong made huge donations to Planned Parenthood, Komen switched gears again. They were sorry for all the trouble they’d caused. They would renew their relationship with Planned Parenthood.

Yet they didn’t say a word about continuing to fund them.

I'm glad Komen apologized. That doesn't mean I am going to leap up and give them a high five. You go girl! In the interest of politics, the influential organization compromised women's health in the worst kind of way. By betraying the women they

Forgive me, but I truly fail to see what the connection is between cancer research and abortion!!! If the Susan G. Komen foundation exists to support cancer research, especially breast cancer research, then that is what it should do, There are other organizations that support a woman's right to choose, whether one feels that it is right or wrong! Think about this, especially as it concerns the recent decision of the administration to require, among others, the Catholic church to provide abortion and birth control options for its employees. How many Catholics refuse to contribute to "Susan" based on the support of "Planned Parenthood"? Pick a charity and support it it, but when you have one that is "multifacited", you are going to loose support. As an example, I could very easily start a charity that supported breast cancer research, and, at the same time, also supported euthanasia! How controversial would that be? Continue to support Komen based on its original mission, and leave the damn politics and controversial issues out of it. If you believe in planned parenthood, then give them a seperate donation!!!

sprtsracer Planned Parenthood provides many health services besides abortion. Some of the services/facilities Planned Parenthood provides include: Screening for cancer, Contraceptives, Pregnancy testing, Vaccinations, Affordable health care, Advocating for state/federal policies that advance health care, Pregnancy options counseling, Sexual health education, Menopause treatments, Adoption referral to other agencies, STD testing, Vasectomies, Tubal litigations,

the number of services by category are as follows:

35% STD testing/treatment

35% contraception

16% cancer screening/prevention

10% other women's health services

3% abortion services

1% other

It had been an unlikely alliance from the beginning--with one group setting out to save lives, and Planned Parenthood dedicated to ending them. Since 2005, the Foundation had justified the relationship by insisting that the money only funded breast cancer screening, education, and health programs. Then the news broke. Planned Parenthood didn't need the money for mammograms, because it never provided them! The clinics only offer manual breast exams, which the National Institutes of Health (NIH) warns is an ineffective form of cancer screening.

Under Komen's new policy, the Foundation will only award grants to organizations that actually do mammograms. That seems reasonable to everyone but the Left, which has spent the last 24 hours unleashing the fury on the Komen Foundation for "politicizing" the issue--when in reality, the Foundation is just trying to protect its resources. As the charity points out, Planned Parenthood is currently under investigation for misusing taxpayer funds. And unlike most in Congress, Susan G. Komen wants to be good stewards of your money. In just the last few years, Planned Parenthood has racked up a record of fraud, Medicaid overbilling, criminal cover-ups, falsifying medical information, violating safety standards, encouraging prostitution and sex trafficking, medical malpractice, accepting racially-motivated donations, and huge profits. Any legitimate organization should back away. (Even wasteful organizations like the federal government!) There are plenty of respectable health clinics out there (1,200, in fact) that would host the screenings without promoting abortion--a procedure that may have more to do with causing breast cancer than curing it.

Not surprisingly, Planned Parenthood and its allies are on the warpath. After all, this isn't just the loss of millions of dollars but another major public relations defeat as well.

All this chatter about how Womens Health should not be about Politics is simply absurd. Just as all the pro-choice ladies on this thread are up in arms and offended that SGK has withdrew funding, those of us who speak for the unborn babies that Planned Parenthood murders have been offended that SGK ever gave them funding in the first place. The only difference is that the Politics that have ALWAYS been there are now not working in your favor. If you are willing to take the blinders off, I encourage you to read unPlanned, written by a former Director at Planned Parenthood - she gives you the real look into the deceitful goings on behind this organization that claims to be all about womens health.

I also need to know - does it not matter to anyone that the whole reason the funding has been pulled (and that, sadly, it might be temporary) is because this supposed wonderful PP is UNDER CONGRESSIONAL INVESTIGATION?!?

Clever Colleen 11 pts

Mona - while I disagree with almost every word in your post, I wanted to point you to the statement that SGK has in fact made:

Clever Colleen thanks for your comments, Colleen. I urge you to read the excellent newspaper coverage about this so-called congressional investigation--which Komen rightly denounced as political and inappropriate this morning in their announcment that they were resuming their funding to Planned Parenthood. It's a very complex issue, to be sure.

Hey Mona,

Ah - we're on the same page again. :) I see this from two sides. First, of course I disagree with their decision and am tired of this relentless assault on Planned Parenthood (my post will be up later on EcoSalon), but more disturbingly, SGK has completely damaged their own reputation, brand and ability to do their work, all in the pursuit of a selfish, short-sighted political agenda (I wrote about that on Triple Pundit). Their actions have impacted women in two organizations: women who rely on PP might receive fewer services due to funding cuts, and the women who have faith in SGK and have hope that their funds will bring about a cure are faced with the fact that the organization has alienated a significant number of donors and corporate sponsors. It's a complete disregard for the consequences of this move, and their media silence yesterday was ... what? A hope that no one would notice or react to their decision? They seemed pretty ill-prepared to defend their decision, but they didn't do much to disguise that it was politically motivated, except accuse us all of "scurrilous accusations" that are distracting them from doing their work (in their rebuttal video that they released late last night). I am deeply disappointed because I believed in the cause and have donated in the past in memory of my three friends who have been diagnosed (one has since passed away), but I can't donate to an organization whose leadership I disagree with and political direction I oppose.

I hope things are going well with you. Cheers, Andrea

This is a really well written, emotionally charged post on subject matter that is inherently very emotionally charged for us women.

If we take emotions out of it and search (and we may want to use a pure search opposed to a sensored search) the terms abortions and cancer and see there are conflicting credible researchers on both sides, it's more than understandable that a charity might not want to partner with a group that might be tied to root causes or be linked as a contributing factor.

While many of the comments are part of a string of responses that try to tie chords of rational thought together to help our community form an understanding around many difficult, emotionally charged, personal women's issues, there's some wasted time in some of the over-emotionally charged comments -- time that could be spent researching things a little deeper than headline news and opinions to uncover some gross facts that indicate our politics, our bodies, and our spirit are all one, and have more to do with making this story complete than we realize.

I prefer more factual, academic things to read.

Thank you.

Mona Gable 21 pts

mrs. twin mom thank you for your perspective. I also appreciate your point about the importance of relying not just on emotion but facts. as a journalist for 20 years, long before i was a blogger, i agree with you completely. unfortunately, as we can see today now that komen has reversed its decision, the facts of why they chose to pull their funds from PP in the first place were at best unclear, and at worst, deceitful.

I find it ironic that your piece uses "Nazi" to characterize Pro-life people. Germany's views on abortion is often called upon as a prelude to Hitler claiming Germans are the superior race. There is no reason for such vitriolic hate language for either side. We are all human beings worthy of respect and love.

A few years ago, I walked the 3Day in Chicago. There were women (family and friends) who declined to contribute because of Komen's partnership with Planned Parenthood. I respect that decision. That is the way our country works best: moral objection. Although abortion is perfectly legal, that does not mean everyone must agree to support abortions with donations.

At one time Avon and Komen were partners in the 3Day. Avon split with Komen several years ago because of questionable money-handling practices on Komen's part. Avon now has their own walk to fight breast cancer. Perhaps Komen really is trying to prevent a repeat offense.

II cannot imagine abortions will become illegal. My views are based on researching the Supreme Court decision(See my post on BlogHer http://www.blogher.com/39-years-after-roe-v-wade-revisiting-supreme-court-decision). The decision was not about when life begins, rather it is based on when the Constitution protects a human life.

Komen is a fundraiser for breast cancer research. I hope the money they choose not to share with Planned Parenthood goes to developing better means of early detection than mammograms, which have not reduced the death rate. (See another post of mine on www.theblacktortoise.com).

I have lost friends and family to breast cancer, too. I am pro-life for the born as well as the unborn. That said, I have held the hand of friends who made the difficult decision to choose abortion. Some of those friends were pro-life, too.

This is just awful! I used to do fundraisers for the Komen foundation and it is astounding to me, that they would do this. I will no longer support this organization.

karabuntin 46 pts

I was very disappointed to hear about this today. I lost my mother to breast cancer...Any service that's available to women to catch the disease before it becomes untreateable would seem to be something that SGK would want to support, but I guess not. I won't be donating to SGK anymore. Maybe the American Cancer Society would be willing to take my money.

Mona Gable 21 pts

karabuntin I'm so sorry about your mom. So many of us have lost a loved one to this brutal disease. My own grandmother died of breast cancer at age 50. I agree with you that any organization that provides this kind of vital screening for women needs is critical.

Judy Schwartz Haley 36 pts

I was diagnosed with breast cancer while I was a college student. seriously low income. Komen's unreasonably high administrative take, as well as their political posturing, using low income women as pawns, is unforgivable. Cancer doesn't care if you're conservative or progressive, what your prejudices are, or what your position is on abortion, but whether or not you have access to medical care IS something that has an impact on cancer.

Mona Gable 21 pts

Judy Schwartz Haley Judy, thanks for your comment and sharing your story. It's real women who will suffer because of this inane, wrong-headed decision. And it has nothing to do with abortion.

But at the same token, liberals aren't created with cookie cutters either ;) Jessica, I can understand how you feel.
I had a very wise teacher once tell me that when people use labels in a debate, it is always based on an emotion rather than thought and that it always brings up an emotion rather than thought and can alienate and even anger or hurt those who might otherwise be willing to hold an honest intelligent debate with you. And that once they feel that way, there is no way to change their minds to your side, because you shut your mind from them and forced them to shut their minds from you.
Btw, there are other times of ppl out there besides conservatives and liberals, ladies.

Okay folks... I see a few comments on PP being an 'abortion clinic'. I'm a PP volunteer, and we do a whole lot more than offer abortion services.

Choice is about offering women a full range of options so we each can decide for ourselves what option best works for us. We don't dictate, we don't insinuate, we don't hint. From us, you get facts, from which you make a decision. Simple.

Beyond that element, there are a whole host of services we offer. 3% of PP revenue comes from abortion related services, which means 32.3 times that number is from other than abortion revenue.

People there are dedicated to women's health.

The fact is, looking now at the Susan G Komen for the Cure website, their fourth on the masthead vice president ran for governor in Georgia in 2010 on a pro life platform. What she has likely played a role in implementing:

Going forward, Susan G Komen for the Cure now operates in a politically charged, polarised environment, just like PP. Last I knew, breast cancer makes no distinction on whether it impacts a pro life or pro choice person, it is an equal opportunity disease.

No matter what the organisation does going forward, it has or will tick off one side or the other, and rebuilding trust is a hell of an undertaking, believe me... I know. If it concedes and reverses, now pro life people will pull support, and as of right now, pro choice advocates are doing just that, redirecting their contributions.

This one goes down ialongside the annals of the Edsel and NBC N symbol in the annals of errors by management in corporate America. So unnecessary, so inciteful, so polarising.

So sad.

Statement from Susan G. Komen for the Cure

February 1, 2012

We are dismayed and extremely disappointed that actions we have taken to strengthen our granting process have been widely mischaracterized. It is necessary to set the record straight.

Starting in 2010, Komen began an initiative to help us do a better job of measuring the impact of community grants. This is important because we invest significant dollars in our local community programs--$93 million in 2011, which provided for 700,000 breast health screenings and diagnostic procedures.

Following this review, we made the decision to implement stronger performance criteria for our grantees to minimize duplication and free up dollars for direct services to help vulnerable women. To support this new granting strategy, Komen has also implemented more stringent eligibility standards to safeguard donor dollars. Consequently, some organizations are no longer eligible to receive Komen grants.

Some might argue that our standards are too exacting, but over the past three decades people have given us more than just their money. They have given us their trust and we take that responsibility very seriously.

We regret that these new policies have impacted some longstanding grantees, such as Planned Parenthood, but want to be absolutely clear that our grant-making decisions are not about politics. Throughout our 30 year history, our priority has always been and will continue to be the women we serve. As we move forward, we are working to ensure that there is no interruption or gaps in services for the women who need our support most in the fight against breast cancer.

PP is a full and comprehensive health clinic that just also happens to provide the medical procedure of terminating a pregnancy. PP has services for women and men, and child health services. I think it's outright despicable that the board of Komen allowed this to happen. It once again marginalizes women based on their reproductive choices, instead of treating us like whole women. I've been wary of Komen for a few years now, and this just seals the deal that I won't be helping the organization again, until they clean house.

Sara, I'm guessing you don't know her biography. She's been with the organization less than a year. My guess is that she joined SGK to make a different in breast cancer cure/research -- I'm sure the funding to PP was on her agenda but not the first thing she was going to do before her new office even had a name plate. And Marla, thank you for backing my statement so eloquently that unless one goes with the popular belief, one is considered manipulated or crazy. This is America, where people should have beliefs and convictions without name-calling. Labeling a successful business woman a "right wing-nut" is ignorant. By the first amendement, we all have a right to say/act/believe what we want based on our own convictions. Plus, this isn't a pro-life/pro-abortion debate. It's about what's appropriate. And aligning donated non-profit funds for medical research to a clearly leftist-liberal organization just wasn't right. I agree with Amy. If you were supporting SGK simply because of Planned Parenthood, then go donate your money to PP and leave the rest of us to support cancer research, prevention and cure.

When you hire a Right Wingnut to run your organization, what do you expect? I love the way PRO-LIFE only applies to the unborn children that the wingnuts will then refuse to provide for after they arrive. Yes, public funding will be cut for that too, because the parents can't afford to care for those children. I love the way all these people can sleep at night not giving ONE thought about all the poor women this will kill. See, PRO LIFE only applies to who THEY say it applies to. If you are poor TOO BAD. No, PP is not an abortion clinic, but if you visit their website, abortion is one of the most prominent topics on their homepage. maria...again, you act like she had no idea that PP provides abortions. I don't buy it. She knew the history of PP and chose to provide funding... until the conservatives started putting on the pressure. She "went along with" what you call the "popular belief" for quite some time, no? YES, exactly. It's a charity. So aligning donated funds to an organization that promotes a very controversial practice -- regardless of whatever else it might do -- is unwise, unfair, and not appropriate.
