Donate Baby Blankets to the Sweet Pea Project

Last week I returned home from the local beauty school getting my nasty roots taken of.  My husband said to me as soon as I breezed through the door, flipping my new, luxurious do, "I brought something home for you that I thought you might be interested in.  You should read it.  It's in the kitchen."  Hmm, "What could this be about?" was what I was thinking.

The flyer on the table read:

The Sweet Pea Project was created by Stephanie Cole as a way to honor her memory and reach out to other bereaved parents.  The Sweet Pea Project offers comfort, support and gentle guidance to families who have experienced the death of a baby.  Sweet Pea Project Blankets have been donated to hospitals across the country.

Why are these blankets so important?

When a child dies before or shortly or after birth, the parents leave the hospital with broken hearts and empty hands.  The loss is amplified by the fact that there are very few tangible items to remember the child by.  The Sweet Pea Project collects blankets to donate to hospital and birthing centers.  The blankets are lovingly wrapped around these precious babies and then given to parents to keep.  So far, the project has donated over 700 blankets to grieving parents.  It is our hope that the project will continue to grow so that every parent who faces this profound loss is given a soft blanket to snuggle their child in, and remember their child by.”

After reading that, it was all over.  I was bawling.  I needed to help.  I won’t claim to know what kind of toll it takes on your heart and soul to hold your baby in your arms and then leave the hospital empty handed.  I have experienced two first trimester losses and two unsuccessful FETs.  This type of loss is something that I cannot even comprehend, but I feel that if there is a little something that I can do to ease that type of pain, then I must do it.  I knew that you would want to help to, because that’s what type of people you are.

My goal is to collect 100 blankets by October 15th, National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day

On that day, I would love to present Stephanie, the founding mother of The Sweet Pea Project, with the blankets.  She happens to live in our area and she will be at  a Long's Park for a balloon releasing in honor of those babies who were lost during pregnancy or at birth.

Will you help?

Any type of receiving blanket is welcomed.  Whether it’s flannel, chenille, cotton, pink, blue, decorated with polka-dots or a fun neutral pattern or plain, it will be perfect for somebody.  All blankets must be brand new, unused, clean and smoke-free.

Please comment here and be sure to include your e-mail address so that I can let you know where to send the blankets.  This is such a worthy cause.

A few years before I was born, my mother had a son.

Little Georgie died when he was one day old due to lung complications that at the time(45 years ago) docs simply had no answer.

I'll never forget the pain in my mother's eyes as she told me the story years later.

The pain was still there, and she said the worst part was coming home empty-handed.

Please send an address. I owe it to my mother - and the brother I never knew - to donate.
