Oh yes, it's that time of year, when everyone puts out their "What Scent is Sexiest?" lists. Or the studies on why you're attracted to your partner's smell, like this lengthy one from Psychology Today on scent, hormones, and how we're screwing things up with perfume and soap (oops).
But I'm not here to give you a list of perfume recommendations for you to go and try out -- Glamour's got that taken care of, whether it's scents that turn men on and off (don't smell like a dessert! but they love vanilla! don't smell like flowers! but they love some florals! and don't smell like fruit! but they like citrus, which is a fruit!) or perfumes that will make you feel sexy (that's more like it!).
My most basic suggestion? Wear what makes you feel good. Wear what makes you stand up straighter, with confidence, and what you enjoy wearing. And maybe that means you don't wear anything at all.
But if you do, what do you pick? It could be...
- Your signature scent. Hey, it's your signature for a reason, right? This is what you claim as your scent, what your partner knows and recognizes and loves as "you". And you wouldn't wear it if it didn't make you feel good, right?
- Something new and daring. Sure, why not? Why not try something off of the list? The problem is, though, what if you don't like it? (Or your partner, but really, you're the one who has to wear it!) So maybe something that's not totally brand-new -- maybe don't make Valentine's Day your first time out the gate with this perfume, but something that's still exciting for you.
- Something from your past. If you're like me, you can probably remember what perfume you were wearing at certain points in your life. And if you've been with your partner for a long time, they've probably been with you as you've grown and changed and tried out new things -- and scents! So why not wear something that you wore when your love was new?
- Whatever you like! Maybe it's drugstore body lotion. Maybe it's sparkly edible body powder (yes, there is such a thing). Maybe it's that random bottle you picked up at a boutique or at the Body Shop. Whatever it is, if you love it and how it smells on you, do it.
And that goes for my fellow single ladies, too -- wear what you like, what you want, what makes you feel good. If you don't like it, scrub it off and try something else.
What will I be wearing this Valentine's Day? Considering my plans are low-key so far (going to the mall, woo, yeah!), I'll probably go with something light but still a little sexy. I'm thinking Tokyo Milk Honey and the Moon -- honey, jasmine, sandalwood, and a bit of violet. I'll probably wind up taking a nice hot bath with some LUSH goodies at the end of the night, too.
What about you? What are your perfume-y plans, if you have any?
