SxSW Last Minute Panic - I Mean Travel - Advice

Going to Austin, are you? ME TOO! I AM JUST A LITTLE BIT EXCITED! (A-hem.) But if you're just now making your last minute plans, you're probably feeling the pinch of expensive hotel rooms, questionable transportation options, and yeah, airfare. I can't help no the airfare, but there are some things that might help you get the other details sussed.

Transportation
Austin runs the Airport Flyer to 18th and Congress. If you're traveling light (you ARE, aren't you?) this can be a great option. I'm a big fan of taking local transit - it's super cheap - I think it's 1.50! - you get to see your destination from an odd, slow point of view, and locals take the bus.

Bicycle Sport Shop is providing valet parking for your bike at SxSW. It's another fantastic way to get around while you're there - call the bike shop and book your rental, pronto. It's a few bucks more for a lock. They tell me that helmets aren't required by Austin city law, but if you can, wear a bucket. You use your brain for thinking and stuff, right? I love this idea, and yeah, I booked my bike.

For more transportation options, check the Getting Around section of the SxSW site. There's all kinds of shuttley things, maps, and more useful information.

Accommodation

Seriously, you haven't booked your room? That's okay, because you should never, ever, EVER underestimate the magic of Craig's List. Go put your ad up RIGHT NOW. I'll wait. Done? Okay then. It's how I found a very nice deal on a studio apartment near the University, it may help you find roomies if you find yourself shelling out for a double that you can't use, it's magic.

Sign up for my.SxSW too. Not a day goes by that I don't see someone tweet that they need roomies. That big public forum is for you, someone out there needs you to help defray the costs of that executive apartment, has a fold out couch, etc. amen.

Consider the alternatives. Couchsurfing, AirBed & Breakfast, you know the drill, right?

And hey, since you're going and you're interested in travel, why not make it part of your schedule to drop in for Blog Highways? The presenters will be really happy to see you there.

Hey Pam. I'll be there supporting you and Sheila. No worries on that end. Room is booked and paid for (w/ comp internet and daily breakfast) and I'm driving RedBugg ( http://travelingmamas.com/2008/03/31/the-rules-of-... ) in, since it is waaaay cheaper for me. Now if I could only get someone to sponsor my pass.........

Inspiring you to explore. www.travelingmamas.com ( http://www.travelingmamas.com )
