Take Flight with Pan Am on ABC

BlogHer Original Post

I was kind of excited for the premiere of Pan Am on ABC last night because I've been hearing so much about it lately I wanted to see if it lived up to its hype. But unfortunately, any show that's set in the 1960's now is obviously going to be compared to Mad Men, but Pan Am is really so different. Well, I guess it's not completely different, as it does focus on a "career" driven set of women in 1963 -- "a new breed of women," to quote the show. But I liked it nonetheless. What Pan Am has that Mad Men doesn't is adventure and espionage and international travel, giving it a little more of an edge.

With a high production quality and fabulous sets and costumes, Pan Am has done a fantastic job of recreating the "Golden Age of Travel." when flying anywhere seemed exciting and exotic rather than the complete hassle we deal with today. It almost transports you to that era seamlessly, and feels more like a movie than a TV show. I'm secretly hoping it will have more of a LOST feel to replace my weekly tropical adventure void.

The storyline focuses on four stewardesses referred to as "A new breed of woman with an impulse to take flight" and their international adventures in the air and on land. Think romance, relationships and espionage in a time where women were for the first time in history gaining empowerment and careers outside of the home.

In a series of flashbacks, we get a look inside each of the character's lives and what led them to the present day, which I really liked. The pilots {who maybe could have been a little more handsome} were compelling and had what seemed an integral part in the lives of the four main women. But though Christina Ricci got top billing, her role wasn't actually the main story of the show. I'm hoping it will develop over time, because I'm guessing Christina is the reason many viewers tuned in.

All in all, Pan Am has left me intrigued, and I'm looking forward to seeing just where it will go in upcoming episodes. My DVR is definitely set to record the series.

Did you watch Pan Am on ABC last night? What did you think?
