I went to see a movie last night in attempt at a girls night out which always has a hint of guilt attached to it (that's another blog post).
The movie was called Taken and for those of you mothers out there, don't see it. It's stressful and sick and I only wished that the subject matter could be chalked up to being "just a movie". The plain truth is that the trafficking of young girls is a reality.
And, the crazy thing is that in 1992 I went to Australia to live a semester abroad. Three naive girls up and left Ithaca for sunny Sydney. Three girls traveling up the gold coast for spring break... not having a clue as to where we'd land next.
I would never, and I repeat, would never allow my 20 year old daughter to do what I did. Bare in mind that I am not an overprotective mother but it's not 1992 anymore. By the time my daughter is 20 who knows what human evil will be splashed across my computer, tv, blackberry or radio for that matter.
A phone call to mom after the movie confirmed that she felt peace in knowing that the world was a much simpler place when I was young... and I'm not that old. Still though, I don't know how she let me go without fearing that I too would be "Taken."
