Last week, I was pleased to join the BlogHer community in San Francisco for your 2008 conference. It was a great experience and I enjoyed having the opportunity to meet and speak with so many of you about this year’s presidential election and why I am supporting and (literally) working to elect John McCain.
I especially enjoyed hearing from so many of you during and after the Q&A session moderated by Lisa Stone, in which I participated together with Rep. Allyson Schwartz. Of course, I recognize that not all BlogHers were able to attend the conference or indeed that panel — and even for those who were, I know the time allotted was too short to answer all of your questions in the detail that you would have liked.
That’s why I’m looking forward to taking our conversation further — starting right here and right now.
From now through the general election, I will be posting at BlogHer, and my top priority is to make sure that I hear more of your views and answer more of your questions. I truly hope the BlogHer community will use me as a resource for learning more about John McCain, his demonstrated record, and the policies he is advocating with regard to issues ranging from the economy to national security to the environment — and beyond.
So, rather than me using this space to talk about what I feel is important in this election, I’d like to know what you think.
What will be on your mind when you head to the polls in November? Is it the economy? Gas prices? Maintaining America’s security?
Improving health care? Combating climate change? Defending American values?
Or some, or all, or none of the above?
I’d like to hear your thoughts, first and foremost — and so would John McCain. Women are going to play a tremendously important role in this election and, rest assured, we at the RNC and the campaign are excited and looking forward to having this conversation.

Welcome To BlogHer
Hi Liz,
It was great to meet you last weekend at BlogHer.
My question is, what is Senator McCain's position on providing universal healthcare in this country? How does he intend to offset the power of the insurance companies and help the people who slip through the medical insurance cracks?
Thanks.

Health Care
I am interested to know what John McCain is going to do with health care as well. I am staunchly against a universal plan run by the government. I do see the problem some have with our current plans, but I see that more as a problem with lobbyists that needs to be controlled. Am I wrong? I'd love to have more information on that issue.
It was a pleasure listening to both of your panels and I enjoyed meeting you. Thank you for attending BlogHer '08!

I'm kinda known around these
I'm kinda known around these parts for my, ahem, honesty, so let me show it. I was one of the women who wanted Hillary to win because (a) I thought she would make a better leader, and (b) I don't trust Obama. I was one of those who said "if not Hillary, then McCain" for all sorts of reasons which I won't get into here because I don't want to have that argument yet again. However, McCain has made some moves that put him with the Conservative Religious Right and I'm fearing that his integrity may be less pure than he would have us think. Just how much is he willing to give up in order to get the backing of the Religious Right? That's a rhetorical question, because I know your job, as a surrogate, is to reassure me, etc. etc. But I'm watching him and I'm listening to him--as I am with Obama. My mind isn't made up yet, so no one should count on my vote.

Welcome Liz
I am very happy to see you using your first post here on BlogHer to immediately engage our community.
I'd like to hear more about Senator McCain's plans education and how we right the wrongs of 'No Child Left Behind' - I'm sure I will think of many more questions, but as a Mom getting ready to take her first child to kindergarten in a few weeks, education is top of mind.

Hi Liz, welcome!
Sorry to miss meeting you at BlogHer. I'm new to the community as well.
My top issue is national security, then energy/gas prices/the economy, next health care.
With the exception of national security, I like the idea of smaller government, because I think it empowers families and individuals.
Health Care. Health Care. Health Care
I've actually read really great things about the McCain proposal for health care and I really appreciate that it breaks the employer dependency cycle - good news for us self employed folks. I'd like to hear more about that.
Diplomacy: I would really like to see the US recover it's standing in the world. The disastrous policies of the Bush administration have less patriot travelers doing the Maple Leaf masquerade. I object to that , but I understnad the sentiment. First? Gut us out of Iraq.
Partisans politics. Really. Fuel economy, global warming, education are not partisan issues. Everyone says they want to work across the aisle and then, it's all politiczied I'd like to see an end to that. Stop bickering, Congress, and get back to work.
Civil Rights: The Bush adminstistration has used terror as an excuse to erode our civil rights in a shameful manner. Holding prisoers without charge, searching library records without warrants, wiretapping... all signs of creeping faciscm. It's terrifying.
Candidly, there's a snowball's chance in hell of McCain winning my vote. However, there was a time when I actually said I'd have a hard time not voting for him were he to run. I've been educated out of that crazy talk, but as his party leader, whether he wins or not, he has the opportunity to influence policy and I would like to see how that affects everyone up for election in this race, not just the President.

Equal Pay For Women & Education
In addition to hearing more about Senator McCain's position on education, as Erin mentioned, I would like to hear Senator McCain's specific position on and plan for ensuring equal compensation for women and discouraging sex based discrimination in the workplace. We've all heard his "more education and training" comment, it would be wonderful for him to expound on those thoughts further given his audience here and clarify exactly what he feels is the key to success for American women in the workplace today. As well as how he plans to make that key accessible to us all.
Thanks
for all the thoughts and suggestions. It sounds like you’re interested in hearing more about John McCain’s health care proposals, but quite a few other topics as well. I’d like to gather in a few more ideas of what other BlogHers have on their minds before coming back on any one topic, specifically. In the meantime, hope everyone has a great weekend!
Contraception, Contraception, Contraception
What is McCain's response to the proposed legislation by HHS that places the rights of health care providers ahead of the rights of patients seeking access to contraception? My post about this is here
