Taking the plunge

First a few things about me:

  • I'm overweight to the point of being obese.
  • I've ridden the diet rollercoaster and I hate it.
  • I have medical problems that truly mean that if I don't do something about my weight, I'm going to die before my time.
  • I'm ready to make a change NOW

With all that said, I think I'm ready to go back to an old friend:  Vegetarianism.  I feel good when I don't eat meat, but it's hard living with two Y chromosomes who won't eat vegetables.  But you know, I think I'm ready to face this challenge head on.

 As the person in charge of all cooking in the home, that means that the decision of what to eat is mine to make.  That's pretty cool when I think about it.  Last time I went vegetarian, we lived on Mac & Cheese and Spaghetti Marinara for a year.  I don't want to do that again.

 So, my plan is this:  30 days of no meat.  (I've been visiting PETA's website and they've inspired me.)  I will eat eggs and cheese, but I do not want them to become substitutes for meat every day. 

 I will use this blog to document what went well, what didn't go well and how I feel.  At the end of the 30 days I'll make a decision whether to continue.  Start date:  June 30.  So I'll be vegetarian while camping with my sister's family.  That ought to be interesting.  But I'll figure it out as I go.

And just so I don't lose my place on this, here are a list of meal suggestions for my own personal use along with anybody who would like to "borrow" them.

 Breakfast:

  • Cereal with soy milk (looove soy milk)
  • Oatmeal
  • Granola

Lunch:

  • Avocado and sprouts and mayo on a bagel
  • Salad in a pita
  • Tempeh salad sandwiches

Dinner:

  • Tofu stir fry with snow peas, broccoli, carrots and sprouts
  • BLT sandwiches with Morningstar "bacon" for me.
  • Quorn
  • Baked potatoes with assorted toppings
  • Stuffed tomatoes

I know I could probably duplicate most dishes that I make at home with one fake meat or another, but that's not what I want to do.  Personally, I find it to be taking the easy way out because it doesn't require much thought or creativity on my part.  Also my guys find meat substitutes to be rather unsatisfying.  But they're not afraid of tofu.  So with that all in mind, I plan to get as creative as I can and document what I did here and whether or not it was a success.

 Day 1 will be Tuesday June 30th.  And odd day, yes.  But Tuesdays are my telecommute days so I can go grocery shopping a little in the morning.  It also gives me Monday evening to do some prep work, like making a batch of my homemade granola.
