[Editor's note: I think the most books my husband and I have collectively had out from the library is somewhere in the 30 range. I can only imagine how many we'd be checking out if we had children. I am impressed with 47 library books currently at casa de phillips. What's your library check out record? - Karen]

A Tale of 47 Books

Currently I have 47 books checked out from our local public library.

As witnessed by the large amount of books we take out of the public library on a weekly basis, reading is an essential part of our daily life here at casa de phillips. All four of us love to read, love books and love the library.

Many parents want to know: How does one make such a love for the written word grow and flourish in children?

Put words everywhere.

My sister had to open a second card in her daughter's name because she was always at the 100 book limit for the Colorado Springs system. She homeschools three kids and I only have one kid, there's no way I can beat her in this contest.

Err no idea. I know the limit is 75 at our library, but our librarians override it for us. On the other hand, we have seven readers in our house. I read a ton as does my mother. (Why yes, yes I did finish six books over the weekend. )

I have 14 items checked out right now. That's about average and doesn't include what the fake husband has checked out. It also includes a couple of DVD and cookbooks.

When I was in middle school, I petitioned to be allowed to check out more than the 10 books that minors were usually allowed, and I LOVED to check out 20-50 every time we went. Usually, I finished them all no problem (or at least tried them all).

Now, I usually get 10-15 books for my daughter and 2-5 for me, depending on how many of my requests come in at once. I feel like I've been in a bit of a library book slump though. I need some new books to try!

my mom always had this rule that you couldn't take more books than you could hold yourself (which i always felt like wasn't nearly enough). lately though i've been digging kindle for ipad so i've been buying books instead of going to the library.

I love, love, love my library. My heart swelled with pride when it was named the best library in the country. King County Library System (Seattle area). (I don't work for the system, just love life-long learning via books).

I love seeing all of the library patrons talking about their check out habits! More people should use the darn library! :-) - Denise

We bought our house in no small part because of its proximity to a branch of the KCLS. We walk there 2-3 times a week. My 3yo right now grabs all the Clifford and Curious George books available. We have a tote bag hanging on the banister of the stairwell, to keep the library books that are ready to return.

We usually average about 100 items (books, CDs, magazines, DVDs, video games) checked out at a time.

Generally as many as I can possibly carry. On a good week, I read ten books a week.

By myself I have 11 out and two waiting to be picked up. This is the result of all my holds coming in at the SAME TIME after waiting about 4-6 weeks. Which normally I would love, but I have exams in 6 out of 8 classes this week... it's been a struggle between studying and reading, so far Turn of Mind by Alice LaPlante is winning... ut oh :-O

I think we've got abt 25, thanks to a trip I made last week. Really wish my library could do some sort of mail drop on the west side of town where I live, as I find getting to the library is hard. (they already have a drop off box near me, which has saved me from thousands in overdue fees, but I wish I could get my holds delivered!)

We have 52 checked out right now and that's pretty low. We average 75, which is our library's "limit" (they always over-ride the limit for us, lol.) - Denise
