Sightings of Creatures in the Wild

We are here in Northern PA and on a little lake in the woods. So far we have seen Grandaddy Turtle (a big snapper) in the lake near us, a red snake on a hike (non-venomous), beaver on the lake while we were canoeing, and the bald eagle near its nest. The end of the lake belongs to the animals and we take the canoe each night very carefully and quietly there, being careful not to get too close. The bald eagles have a huge nest in one of the trees. They and their ofspring have been seen there for years. It is such a privilage to have them there. And we love our beaver.  Read more >

My Library Adventure!

On my way to the Library yesterday I had to stop and smell the…No, just joking but I did snap this shot before even leaving my driveway!   Read more >

Bud Manning, the "Wood Chip" Man

When Mick pulled into the garage on Saturday afternoon, the whole space immediately filled up with the beautiful smell of freshly chipped cedar mulch. It was slightly damp, which was making the aroma stronger. I think I walked into the garage three or four times that evening just to sniff the air.  Read more >

The World is Rolling In At Our Feet

I officially retired four years ago as a speech-language pathologist in private practice...which, by the way, was an enjoyable and highly rewarding career. I'm back to work now, only one day per week, in order to keep abreast of things a bit, and continue my saga of traveling to those chosen far-and-away places on my bucket list. I've been lucky to be able to work a little when I want to as there has been a shortage of speech therapists nationwide for quite some time.  Read more >

Magic heating

Spent some time at our lake cabin. We've been retreating to this property for over 40 years. There are so many memories there, in every tree, every dip in the path through the woods, every morning when the mist rises off the water when the sun breaks through the trees. I read an article in a science magazine to the effect that your memories change every time you visit them. I guess every visit leaves a mark, which asks the question of how much memory is real and how much is all marked up from visits.  Read more >

Where We Should Retire

Where to Retire

Five good friends at dinner and the topic turned to my friend Molly’s mom.  Although “Mom” was the trigger,  the topic was us.  Molly had just relocated her mom to a senior living center and was saddened that mom didn’t have any friends there. Mom is fine, actually quite happy and relieved to be in a supportive community with activities and meal plans. But Molly – not so much. Actually she was churning.  Read more >

If Age Were Just A Number You Wouldn't Have To Laminate That Card

Today I got my Medicare card in the mail.  I guess this was supposed to be the Government's idea of an early birthday present.   I would rather have had a bracelet or gift certificate to my favorite yarn store, Woolbearers.     I mean they must have made a mistake I cannot almost be the age one has to be to carry one of those cards.  Read more >

Car Talk

We drive an old minivan, has 130,000 miles on it. When it talks, we listen. The familiar squeaks and rattles tell us all is well. When the dashboard says "Service engine soon" it means we didn't tighten the gas cap enough. When all the idiot lights come on, it means we drove on a bumpy road. We follow our mechanic's instruction and drive on a bumpy road again until the lights go off.  Read more >
